I am a home inspector and enjoy working outdoors, indoors and between the floors. All Around The HOUSE touches on a number of topics including home inspections, home improvement, construction, real estate and the environment. I enjoy writing about the "other stuff" and I am fond of cart sausages, beer and corny jokes.
But all joking aside, the decision to buy a home is seldom easy. It's major, complex and very personal. Along with the consideration of price and the various appeals of the neighbourhood, style, size and floor plan, the fundamental question arises - is the house itself sound? What kinds of repairs may be in order, and what can reasonably be expected in the way of costs? And what about the "other stuff?"
Okay you want to know, what's this "other stuff?" It's the things you don't find in the building codes or DIY manuals - but sometimes in the news. It's the things like bits and pieces of vintage plumbing, wiring and heating systems. It's the rot, crud and corruption in the places where only curious home inspectors go. It's a litany of often obscure occupant safety and insurability issues, and sometimes just downright weird stuff that no one can fully explain.
And it's the stuff you don't usually read about, all in one place. I don't claim to have everything covered, and I probably never will... but I'm working at it!
