I live in Auburn Hills which is one of the main corporate meccaa's in Oakland County - it's an International city. It's unique in that it's small town; You give hug's to your neighbors and know the merchants by first name but during the day the population swells. It's an exciting place to live, or work, or live nearby. You'll see people walking from work to local restaraunts, or jogging or the bike clubs that use Squirrel Rd as their main course.
You've no don't heard of the Palace of Auburn Hills that the Detroit Pistons have made famous. Before the Palace was built in the 80's I was gardener, while I was going to college, for a couple of doctor's who owned the site. It had one of the greatest views and I'm sure that's why the Pistons are still blessed! On a clear day you can see downtown Detroit(say about 40 miles away).
And that's the neat thing about Detriot! -we're so connected. There are so many living opportunities in the metro area and the cultural experience is incredible. I can stay home and taste about any type of food, go to Orchard Lake and have a blast on Cass Lake or head east and be on one of the Great Lakes for some Walleye fishing.
There's Deaborn, Birmingham, Novi, Grosse Pointe, Auburn Hills, Shelby: it's an amazing metro area to live in!
I grew up on an island in the mouth of the Detroit River, on Grosse Ile. From East River Rd at night you can see the necklace of lights of the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit skyline.
