30 years in interior design. It's all I've ever really done. I'm originally from Dunkirk, NY, a small town about 45 miles from Buffalo. I got my Associate of Arts degree in Interior Design in 1977 from the first FIDER Accredited, 2 year school. In 1997 I fulfilled a dream and received my Bachelors of Professional Study degree in Architecture. (Phew! Kinda tough, when you're a single mom, raising 2 adolescent boys.) The thought of spending years behind a computer doing CAD drawings and working my way up in the field of architecture didn't really fit into my "dreams". But my architecture degree landed me a wonderful position as a full time  interior design instructor. It also made me a better interior designer, which is really my one true love.

When it comes to residential design, I've done it all. In addition to full scale interior design I've specialized in customizing furniture, custom window treatments, kitchen design and bath design. Most specialized areas are more technical than creative, but I think all designers should spend time specializing in various areas. It's the only way that you can really hone the skills that put you above other designers in your abilities to select, not only attractive materials and finishes, but practical ones. I can't tell you how many times I have been called upon to correct inappropriate materials that had been select for a job by other designers. (Sorry "Other Designers". But it happens.)

In 2001 I moved. First to Wilmington, NC, then Richmond, VA and, now, Charleston, SC. After 1 semester of teaching interior design I began specializing in kitchen design. Now I continue to design kitchens and baths and have also added home staging and redesign to my rapporteur. It all works well together. Keeps me really busy - and I don't get bored.

Although I will gladly and lovingly stage any property, my specialty is in "Owner Occupied" homes. Staging vacant properties might offer a "clean canvas" that allows more creativity and the opportunity to stage a space that you know will look perfect for every showing. But staging occupied homes presents a different challenge. Yes, the home must look perfect for showings. But people still need to carry on with their lives and "live" in their homes while they are trying to sell them. Creating apealing spaces that, not only will attract perspective home buyers, but be easy for the current home owners to maintain in that picture perfect state are the biggest challenge and the most enjoyable. Every home stager loves that really big, high dollar job. So do I. After all, we all have to eat. But for me, the greatest satisfaction comes from creating the biggest impact for the least amount of money. One of the best advertisements for my company comes from the homeowners who tell their friends how little they spent to get such a great look.  Whether I am hired to stage, redesign or create a brand new kitchen, my philosophy is the same.
