Our History

Welcome to Henderson County!

Henderson County, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and formally part of the Cherokee Nation, was settled by Appalachian Mountain Pioneers and became a county in 1838.  It consists of 375 square miles with the county seat being Hendersonville.

The economy is based on manufacturing, agriculture, tourism and retirement.

Henderson County Apple Orchards

The apple is our main crop, as Henderson County ranks seventh in production among all the counties in the United States.  The annual Apple Festival is frequented by locals and many from surrounding states to celebrate the harvest of the crop that averages an income of $22 million or more in a normal year. It is held annually over the Labor Day weekend, making it a great time for a visit.

Steeped in history, Historic Henderson County is enjoyed as a destination location.  You'll want to be sure to visit historic Flat Rock Village, Connemara, the final home of Carl Sandburg, the Flat Rock Playhouse and Historic Downtown Hendersonville with the wonderful shops and restaurants.

Come and see for yourself!

Are you looking for a relocation destination?

Relocate to WNC

Hendersonville has many advantages, whether you are moving for a new job opportunity, or relocating to your dream retirement home.

Historic Hendersonville is centrally located around some great cities. Only 23 miles from Asheville, and 47 miles from Downtown Greenville SC. To Atlanta, only 188 miles. Charlotte NC is 102 miles. Knoxville Tennessee is 130 miles, and Historic Downtown Charleston, SC is 245 miles away. Take a weekend vacation get away to Myrtle Beach, SC, 284 miles away. Or Gatlinburg, Tennessee at 106 miles.

If you are looking for temperate weather, Henderson County is ideal. Daytime average winter temperatures run around the 30′s during the winter, and in the high 70′s to low 80′s in the summer. With dry and fresh mountain air, the spring and summer are a festival of showy colors. Average rainfall is slightly about the national average. We average one snowfall a year which usually melts away by the following day. The hmidity level is low, creating a dry mountain air. Our elevation from downtown is 2100 feet.
