The short answer is no.  We have a huge second home market and those buyers basically shop for homes on weekends and holidays.  That being said I'm more than happy to show property on the 4th of July, and I have sold a house on both Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I was less smart then.  I now take a little more time for me.  But I will always have to work some holidays and most weekends.  Just part of my local market.

If you mean working directly on that holiday day then yes. But if you mean working the day before or the day after a holiday...than no. As we speak I wanted to get away for a few days for the Thanksgiving holiday. Then I go under contract with the holiday in the middle of inspection week. Then sellers call me and want to lower their price. Then I get a new seller on a bunch of land parcels that you can't even find without a four wheel drive and GPS.

Hi Tammy Lankford as you said I try to work smarter but still work on some holidays. The tough part is finding the other days to take off to make up for that missed time off. Most of the time it is just gone.

The big Holidays rarely do I hear from clients, the minor ones don't really count in real estate.   I find the summer months I have to work all weekend, but the slower times I can take Sundays off, especially if the Broncos are playing.   If I had an assistant/buyer broker, they would work on Sundays and nights for me!

Debbie~ We generally take off on Sundays without too much trouble. Most of our clients respect that as a "family" day. As for holidays, we don't generally have trouble taking these "off" either as most of our clients are off doing other things!

One of the better ways to avoid working on most of the weekends and holidays is to refer the prospects to members of your team. The referral fees can be substantial when you have several agents working with clients.

I work on weekends. Infact most of my business is on weekends but I can plan my weekends in advance so if my son is visiting or if we have to attend some family events I do not work .

We try to take off every holiday if at all possible.  Family and sanity comes first in our book; however, because we have a large majority of asian clients, they do not register with any USA holidays, except maybe Christmas.  Their New Year is celebrated on a different day.

No. There certainly are clients who only want to search during the week, and that is fine, but I feel that we must offer flexibility in our schedule because our clients often do not have that option.

I have never tried but one of the top producers in our office does.  He works expireds and withdrawns, refers out all buyers and last year sold $36 million worth of real estate. He has an assistant, but no team.  He is a dialing for dollars machine.

It is interesting reading all the comments above. I don't have the luxury of taking time off when clients come calling. So if the phone rings on the holidays...I am available. (I have got to build up a team)

I usually get Christmas and Thanksgiving off, but I've gotten calls on Mother's Day and some of the other smaller holidays. I work most weekends...so I guess the answer is NO...I have to at least work on weekends.

Bruce, I am glad you put family first.

Bill, I do what I have to do too.

Jon, I get a few weekends off and appreciate every one of them.

Dagny, I hope you take time off during the week.

Gita, You are hardworking and that means meeting the client when the client is available.

Yes, but you have to be willing to work with a referral agent to handle buyers those days.  I personally try to keep everything to one of the two weekend days.
