This is a good question. I thought it was now up to 50 comments a day, and other members have confirmed that.

When Points Are Awarded

We have about 50 different “scoring events” that are running behind the scenes.  These events are constantly evolving based on feedback we get from the community.  Here are scoring events the "point buckets" that you'll see on your points page aligned

Notice: ActiveRain changes the scoring system on occasion as we release new upgrades or respond to people abusing the system.  We'll do our best to keep this up-to-date, but please use this as a reference tool only.

It is easy to understand why the points system may be confusing for many members. There is definitely an element of mystery in the system.

My vote would be to eliminate the current points system and have a fresh start with better ways to recognize excellent blogs and outstanding bloggers.

With the new system, you get points for up to 25 comments PER DAY.  It is not per post.  So, if you have an old post that has over 25 comments, it can still points, if you haven't gone over the allotment of 25 comments.

Likewise, if you have written more than 1 post in one day, the points will stop after 25 comments per day, regardless of how many are on each post.

Thank you each and everyone of you for your answers.  Our post yesterday, had 27 comments, and I answered with 3 of them.  Somewhere after 20, only likes registered.  I have also received points on older blog post.  I checked the breakdown, and the table that Roy Kelley provided, and it does not answer my question. There is a limit but I don't know what it is.  Having said that, there was always a limit after which the post would no longer accumulate points.

I believe the algorithm has been set to 50 comments per day from the membership that will get points. Just lately I received points on some very old posts that topped out months ago. So they really do live on.

I know there used to be a maximum number of points for comments received but I found this today - points breakdown  and it now says that points earned from comments on your posts are top secret? Would love to know what they are up to
