I vary it depending on the situation.  From 24 hours up to 3 days.

I give about 24 hours only.

Vern hit it on the nose...Actually that party with the offer OR the counter can pull at anytime before it is accepted.  How long to wait depends on many factors as time frames, and ability of the other party to be able to give an answer.

No longer than 48 hours...

Contact the listing agent to find out what the situation is.  Those "one hour response" times usually indicate that the buyer or the buyer's agent are going to push the seller around during the transaction.

I call the other agent before writing an offer to find out if the seller is even local or has moved, on vacation or whatever. If they are local 24 hours.

As it is with most parts of an agreement of sale it becomes a tool and may range from a few hours to two days depending on other circumstances.

If it is determined the buyer agent has placed unreasonable time limit (less than 24 hrs) this is seen as a negotiation strategy that starts with compelling the seller to jump through artificial hoops. When the seller starts going backwards, it hard to regain momentum. 

When such strategy is detected, the result will be NO RESPONSE, by design.

The reality is, the buyer agent and the listing agent should have conversed regarding the prevailing situation and reached an understanding regarding expected turn around time.

If one begins the process with unreasonable demands, it portends what the future holds. 

But I understand. Buyer does not want seller to shop the offer. Sorry, they can and they will, and the 'highest and best' is enevitable.

If I have a clean offer, and if I know the seller is in town, I typically only give them till 10pm or noon the next day.  I feel if I give them too much time, they can shop my offer.

24 to 36 hours unless you have prior knowledge that the seller is out of state or out of the country. Being in a military community that is often the case and it takes longer and with different times zones it can be harder to get a response in writing.

We give about a day's notice to respond to our offers - unless otherwise specified by the listing agent, Jan Green .

AS long as you want...until there is a response and a signed contract, the buyer and pull their offer.  At least in Minnesota.

After the offer is sent a heads up phone call to the listing agent affords you an opportunity to discuss a time frame to respond.
