During the last real estate crash, many homeowners were living in homes that were underwater...
I live in a Yellow Submarine, on a dry lake.

I was stationed on a Nuclear Submarine for 4.5 years and did 7 patrols of an average 80 days a piece with no windows. I could handle it still!

I actually did have a rather unique experience with my two sons once. One of their very imaginative teachers hosted an overnighter in the glass walled tunnel that envelopes the shark thank at San Diego's Sea World.
It was indeed a very unique experience awakeing to a great white staring at me with his mouth wide open and razor sharp 6 to 12 inch pointed fangs less than 3 inches from my head.

Dear Bruce,
The marine environment is more fragile, than we may think. I do not think, we should be bringing our destructive, polluting ways into that neighborhood more than we already do.

Sure, but fantasize about living on Mars more often. I think I will go there and start a company called Red Real Estate. Huge lots and scenic Earth views.

Great Question Bruce! Lol- I would not- I would rather be at the edge of the water looking across;) Now- if there was a walking tunnel- I could totally go for that!

No way, I have tried scuba diving several times and it just doesn't work for me. Rather snoakel I think I like being at the surface better.

I have trouble thinking of advantages to living underwater. It has been written about over the years in magazines like Popular Science but it always seems to have too many downsides. If it were very practical I'd think deep sea drilling rigs would be designed like that.

Hell NO... they call that SCUBA... I'm not sure my clients are ready for extremes like living on mars or 10,000 feet under the sea..

I could live on the water better than under the water. I am a Cancer by astrological sign and am happy to live near the water in Corpus Christi, Texas. My family used to have a lake cottage in northern Indiana. Practically lived up there in the summer. It was my way of vacationing. I could deal with a houseboat for a while also. Ironically, I don't swim well at all. On the water, near the water, yes. Under, absolutely not!!

When the fish look in throught the window, who is in the aquarium? Just do not expect to go out on the deck. There could be above surface garages, parks, pools, and bridge to shore.

Not for me. But, I would vacation in a habitat with an underwater view of a Polynesian coral reef.

Fascinating question & while it might be something we don't have a choice about given the rate of global warming, I can't imagine not have my view, natural sunlight and the ability to walk outside any time I want. Outdoor living spaces are all the rage now, so I can't imagine we'll go there ... until we have no choice.

Hi Bruce Walter
No I definitely would not as I do not like to get my head wet when I swim so I cannot imagine living underwater. I do not even like the area of the SF Bart that goes underwater. Interesting idea though.

Not unless it was the only way to survive. I'd feel like I was in a cage if I couldn't walk outside whenever I please. I don't even like staying out in a boat for too many hours.

Depends on how toxic tera-firma is.
If my survival did not depend on it, I prefer place where I can open the window.
What is the #1 comment those who visit the space lab say was most difficult to adjust to? THE SMELL. Closed enviroments present some real challenges that may require opening the window!

Anita, I remember how scary it was the first time I went snorkeling and I think it could be scary being down deeper with scuba diving. Just a sense of being trapped; I sure admire those who do so as they have mastered the mysteries of the depths!
941,688
941,688
Mark, I would take living underwater over living on the moon any day, although the views would be out of this world!
941,688
Eve, I would think any underwater community would need to be located in a part of the world where the water was relatively calm and sunlight could be filtered down to the underwater units. This type of futuristic living would only be for a certain type of person, for sure!
941,688
Anna, well you can't argue with that, but I would see some type of easy access to the surface where residents could commute to work, shop, and enjoy everyday activities on land.
941,688
Eve, having that sunlight is necessary for most of us as we need it for good mental health.
941,688
Lyn, just imagine some underwater units a couple of hundred feet out in crystal clear Lake Michigan! I could handle that for sure, although the ice in the winter would be a challenge!!!
941,688
Keith, at least present day we don't have to worry about it as there don't appear to be any options offered.
941,688
Jill, I think I could live underwater if it wasn't too deep and you had easy access to the topside.
941,688
Doyle, I could handle being under the water about 50 feet in the Caribbean where the water was calm and there was plenty of sunlight, but no way in the darkness of two miles down!!!
941,688
Pamela, I understand completely. You Californians have to have all that sunshine!!!
941,688
Theresa, it would take a special person to live like that and I think it would be very spooky if the colony was in the depths of the ocean surrounded by darkness. Where in Northern Indiana did you have the cottage? Was it around Culver or Syracuse?
941,688
Marshall, the costs for now would seem to be prohibitive, and what would be the long term impact of living in a pressurized environment like that?
941,688
Fred, this would be a hotly debated issue concerning the environment if something like this was proposed and I don't think the current administration and the EPA would go for it.
941,688
Ray, I thought of that one corny movie with the monster shark, and I could just visualize some monster shark ramming the glass bubble letting all that water in!
941,688
Dwight, that is what I would envision a developer doing where there was easy access and integration to the coastal community back on the shore.
941,688
Peter, Mel, and Jim: I understand completely! I don't think I could do it unless it was only about 50 underwater where sunlight still filtered down to enjoy the beauty of the environment.
941,688
Tina, I just saw a map of what the US would look like if all the polar ice melted and millions would be underwater! I would think there would be an easy way to get to the surface and land or an easy way to exit and enjoy the water with scuba diving.
941,688
Chris, I would bet there has to be an underwater restaurant somewhere in your state of Florida so maybe you could visit and see what you think!
941,688
Kristin, it would be a huge adjustment and I think candidates for a futuristic underwater environment would need to be carefully screened.
941,688
Ben, I would envision an environment with the crystal and calm waters of the Caribbean where there would be large sections of thick glass that would allow in light from above and unlimited views of the beautiful aquatic surroundings.
941,688
Marte, this type of closed environment would be difficult for most people and you appear to be with the majority for the moment based on the answers so given!
941,688
Annette, I take it you would save money on your underwater abode by not having the screens on your window package?
941,688
Kevin, I would say you are right by the fact that we don't have communities like these present day.
941,688
Gita, it would take a special type person and the location would be important as well for if you were not deep enough where you could still have light and the water was clear that might make it tolerable for some.
941,688
Kathleen, I would imagine there would be some way to easily access the coast or if it were out in the ocean there would be some large platform above the surface where that would be possible.
941,688
Tom, if you had a water repair job it would be job security for sure, as it would be the mother of all jobs!
941,688
Georgie, there are some cities where that is common, but the only thing I would have against the houseboat would be the brackish water and smells of being in a back bay.
941,688
Dorte, you probably don't have to worry about this happening for some time as the costs would be great and demand from the comments indicate it won't happen any time soon. You are right about it being a very fragile environment! Thanks for you comment, Dorte!

No problem! Just as soon as my Federally subsidized scales and gills are approved for cross-species transplant is completed.
You see, we farm boys are really down to earth home buyers.
I was promised that if I like my gills, I can keep them.
What? How did the installation instruction wind up on her server?
She did what with my email? Well, I didn't knoe that was the village we had to take.
That includes me? Village idiots, huh?
Sorry, I won't be able keep my word. Someone else will have to go!
941,688
Russ, I sure know what you mean, or I would worry about some captain dropping an anchor on top of the plexiglass roof!
941,688
941,688
Paul S. Henderson how great to hear from a Submariner! Were you on a boomer with the 80 day patrols or an attack boat? I would be interested in your opinion on Blind Man's Bluff, as that is still the most interesting book I have read in the last 20 years!!!
