both can be considered full my question is "who is productive".... there are agents who can devote 2 hours a day, and they make money.... there are other who spend 60 hours a week and make pennies....

Back in the 1990s, Sacramento had a recession that lasted several years.  It hit the real estate industry hard.  At the time, I took a "temporary" job at a software development company.  In no time at all I was selling homes to the software engineers and developers, who worked there.  That temporary job ended up lasting over 8 years.  And, they were also among my most productive real estate years as well.  So, the line of part-time and full time agent got blurred a little.  I think some hang on knowing the difference, when the answer isn't quite that clear!

Hi Gita -- an age old real estate question.

For me it's not so much full versus part time but the level of service that matters along with the results achieved.

I consider myself a Full Time Agent and I also work for an Attorney Full Time. I am the Sole Paralegal and have lots of flexibility at the Law Office. My Attorney understands if I need to go show homes or meet with clients. As a matter of fact, he's even okay with them meeting me in the conference room at the Office! I make time for working my Real Estate Business through the day and also my Paralegal duties. It's a very small Law Office so it's easy to work both.

Gita Bantwal I believe it all depends on the agent. I have a part time agent who produce as much as a full time. As long as they are doing their work I can care less how they manage their time.

I do not believe it's anyone's business how many hours a certain person puts in.  Call yourself a full time Realtor if you like but whats wrong with merely "Realtor"?

I like John McCormack 's answer. When I was doing it part time I know for a fact that I was making more sales than some full time agents. However, I would never tell the client I was full time.

You just know it. No need to count hours, days, etc.

I think a full time agent is someone that devotes full time hours to their real estate business.  If a 2nd job takes away from that, I don't consider them full time.  If a 2nd job is in addition to that, I'd consider them full time.

That's a good question.  I guess it would depend on if the agent who works 7 days a week but only a few hours a day can really get back to people in a timely manner.  If someone works another job from 8-5 and can only answer calls and emails between 5-midnight I don't know if I consider them full time.  If they are working every day then they should be considered fulltime regardless of the hours.  The one agent who doesn't have another job - should find something to do during the day - there is always something that could be being done.  In this case they may be the ones considered not to be full time.

Gita - I think anyone whose primary income, and time spent working, is spent on real estate would be considered a full time agent. If and agent is only working when they have clients, then I would say they are not doing a very good job at their job.

I do not consider hours worked for agents status as full time.  Rather that Real Estate is their ONLY job.  You either are or not full time Real Estate.  Mark

A person who has a “full-time” job and also sells real estate is not a full-time agent.

An person who works 40+ hours per week in real estate but is not making ends meet so takes an additional job to supplement income may be a full-time agent.

An agent who works 2 days a week and makes enough sales and income to satisfy their needs…a full-time agent, I guess.

Seems difficult to give a clear-cut, absolute answer to your question.

I would say it could be the agent that puts in 40 hours or more however they get that in. It doesn't matter what days as long as they are covering their business.

A full time agent puts Real Estate before any other job he may hold.  Many have part- time jobs andif they ge in the way, the agent is NOT full time.

I have a unique take on this. I think a full time agent is someone that regardless of the number of hours they spend they dedicate the time needed to ensure thier clients get the service they deserve. Some of us do it 7 days a week (us and some do a great job with much fewer.  If their clients are happy and get excellent care, who are we to judge?
