you ARE EXACTLY RIGHT and there should be some way of policing discussions about fees and shutting those down immediately!

No one should be asking or answering questions about commission, it is against federal law. You only have to go over to Trulia to see agents after agent answering them though, i dont think they were ever trained properly.

Thank you for your answers. Lise you can probably answer legal questions. Great suggestion to police the questions about fees.

"Call your attorney."
"Call your accountant."
"Anti-trust laws prevent me from answering."
" and anything containing 'Realtor code of ethics' make me cringe.
And I would use the techniques taught by the past chairmen Allen Greenspan to give the pretense of an answer.

I would hope tax and legal questions would be asked more for opinion, and see nothing wrong with asking.

I feel the same I do not answer legal or tax questions as I am not a professional in those areas. I stick with what I know!

Agreed. Violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act to discuss fees and compensation rates.
Legal questions? Only your attorney or your State Board Legal Counsel should be answering legal questions. It is a matter of agency.
Tax questions? Your CPA, but don't ask the I.R.S.; you will get a different answer to the same question with each person you speak to there.

Gita Bantwal Those are questions that can get you into serious trouble. Stay within your own area of (licensed) expertise.

I will answer real estate questions, but I won't talk about how much I make. If someone wants legal or tax advice I tell them to seek the advice of an attorney and tax professional.

Gita, I am just amazed that NAR hasn't received an exemption on the Sherman Act. I find it interesting that doctors can freely limit competition and keep former doctors out of the area and that all the gas stations on the corner can have the same price, but real estate agents are a threat to free competition in The Republic. Until things change though, MUM is the word!
