I have 5 processors, no underwriters. All have come to me, as referrals. I am about to hire an 6th, one of our LO's did her mortgage.

Someone that is detail oriented, and actually cares about the people behind the loan #'s. When people care, they are more creative, and spend more time doing things right than when it's "just another file". They also must be confident in their ability - there's no room in the current atmosphere for someone that declines loans because they're unsure of their ability to assess a risk.

I agree with Jill Murty, the number one thing I look for in a mortgage underwriter is someone who can evaluate the information provided from both traditional and non-traditional earnings and determine what can they do for the client. The 2nd item on the list is to call back.

that's a hard one because the underwriter works for the mortgage co. to make sure that deal have everything needed, i would say a person that is punctual, attention to detail but yet again fast . someone that has open door at some time thru the day if your loan officer needs to ask a question about a deal.
have a great day Stephanie

The short answer is "brains", but that's coming from a frustrated realtor.
I think the ability to evaluate information from non-traditional earners in a big picture way rather than going straight to the NO.
