Speaking as a HOA President a lot of the rules are nuts. 

No bird feeders.  Their theory is that bird feeders are feeding the chipmunks and the population of chipmunks is getting out of control because of it.  REALLY?  How about you have wildlife there...across from forest preserve?  They are trying that one for the next year, to see if it helps reduce the chipmunk population. 

same association:  You can't wash your car on driveway and no sunbathing in any public area (i.e., driveway, porch..)...

I saw one pet policy where you could only have up to 50 fish - in an aquarium, I presume.  Any other aquatic animals had to get special permission to be there (I have 2 sliders).

I'm certain I have not heard the silliest one yet but a recently found regulation went something like this: You can have two dogs with aggregate weight not to exceed 40 pounds or a maximum of one dog (no weight limit), 2 cats and four birds. My immediate thought went to Newfoundland, tigers then ostrich or emu for varieties sake!

You have  to have x amounts of plants in your front yard, if you add some beautiful landscaping to make it look better they make you remove them.

You must repaint your house in the original colors - but we don't have a record of what those are!!

I can't beat the ferret rule, Eric. But there are a lot of silly ones!

Residents could not mow lawns before 9 am, but the lawn jockeys who cut the common area grass and the green started at 8 am every Saturday. 

I see where some HOA will not let you fly an American Flag. That is terrible.

Erik - I don't think I can beat the no ferret rule, but we are not allowed to have portable basketball hoops in our driveway.
