All of the above although customers most often don't know what designations mean.  Depending on who I market to, I will explain what SRES or CIPS stands for and I do think it makes a difference.

I earned a couple because the real estate 'industry' told me they were important. I'm not really sure they are...and am thinking they are just a way for companies to make money.  I agree with Chris and Dick Dovorany  - Clients don't know the diffeence. They just know whether they like me and whether I think I can do the job.

I think I have one designation and I don't remember what it is.  I've got a long, successful history, and I depend on that..  If someone asks, I say that I don't have a professional designation, but they can fine me listed in Marquis' Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business and Who's Who in Real Estate.

Nevertheless, I am a dedicated supporter of continuing education, especially when education dedicated toward licensing doesn't do a darned thing to teach the ins and outs of listing and selling.

1. Potential MARKETING VALUE.

2. Potential MARKETING VALUE.

3. Marketing value.

Most recent example is the CDPE when we were up to our necks in short sales. The marketing value of that designation has sunset.

Let's foresee the possibilities . and get results!

For me, the designations come from learning something new and being able to apply it to make the client experience the best it can be for them.  Most of my clients don't know about the letters - nor do they care.  Results are what they seek.

Education First. Love me some new brain-tools!

1a. Referrals (CRS)

Marketing Value Second. (if nothing else, other agents may put stock in them when deciding on an offer and the decision is close.

Clients rarely validate it (because most have no clue what they mean) so client opinion 3rd.
