Most of the ones we have here, and they are quite popular, are attached to the house with a separate entrance. We do not call them mother in law suites but the preferred term is office or guest casita.
In-law suites should always have an outside entrance. #1
2, but 3 is even better 4 would be a 3 and on the other side of the state.

Hi Mike, I would definitely pick option 3.
MIKE ROCK There used to be a builder in my subdivision who put the In-Law suite in the primary home, but as a separate entity.
I vote for 3. It gives everyone a sense of space and privacy. A
Unfortunately, they are not very common in my area. I like option #2.
