We keep six months of funds available in case things run dry.  In this business one never knows.  We don't owe for anything and are comfortable staying in the black.

It's not about how much (that's subject to individual needs & wants and we can't judge who needs what), its how long do you want to earn. Risidual income is my exit strategy. Rental properties & having a book of business to sell for a referral fee schedule of payments over years. I want to cherry pick my clients and refer the rest away and then retire with my tenants paying my bills and my book of business paying my retirement :)

Jack, your question if meaningful for the critical reader.

The discipline to live within your NEED and never at the level of your wants is essential.  Be aware...'and be comfortable' is within your wants.

Living within need and assigning the surplus (the gift to you) to relieve others of suffering, or for the benefit of others means I, You, will NEVER NEED again.

I will be very interested to see what the replies are.  I often times wonder, "how much do I need to make to be successful?"  It seems to be a moving number as every year I sell more real estate and every year, I feel like I could handle more.  This is the first year I feel like I have as much business that I can truely handle at one time, but we are only half way thru the year.  To answer your question, my wife is a partner at a law firm here in town, I dont have to sell anything to live comfortable :)  Good question.

I like what @Michael Jacobs said.  I like to make enough to help others when I'm done paying my own bills. There is never enough for the need.  I just want to do my part.  And, sometimes, my part means spending time with people instead of giving them money.

I think one should think in terms of profit and not how much you make. Too many people have no idea about profitability but they sure can post their awards on Facebook. My question to anyone who is a REALTOR® is this: If you were a publicly traded company, would you invest in your own company. Most agents wouldn't have a clue.

You need to earn the amount that will allow you to reach your personal production goals while setting aside funds for a comfortable retirement.

For many years, my personal goal was to continue as a member of the Platinum Club at RE/MAX. That requirement was $250,000 in personal commission income each year.

The Lifetime Achievement Award at RE/MAX requires a total of $3,000,000 in commission income.
