I've seen it both ways, I think for the most part it has to do with the vent for the dryer being closest to an outside wall.

Stefan Winter has it right on. of course some areas on propane etc do influence if its gas/elec etc. there are building codes about length of the exhaust/vent pipe.lol and that can be a issue. but not usually

I've seen washer and dryer on either side, generally with the dryer closest to an outside wall. But it wasn't an install issue, it was a builder issue.

No, I don't believe there is a right way or a wrong way, that is why you can buy either a left opening or a right opening door for both front loading washer and dryers.
