How about in a Dr. office where it says to please turn off your cell phone in respect to the Dr. and other patients; then the Dr. walks in on his cell phone making airline reservervations. I called him on it and pointed to the sign on the wall...

Any and EVERY loud talker equiped with a cell phone will prove to be rude in their use of it.

I control the context by:

  1. placing my cell phone on the table top and making sure they see me place it in sleep mode
  2. Stating our purpose
  3. Asking can we talk?
  4. Suggesting they mute the phone or find a more benefical time.

Failing to do so suggests your time is less valuable than everyone else's in the subjects sphere. In some cases, agents value is EXACTLY what they allow others to dictate.

The worst thing for me when I'm a customer and the person working somewhere is on a personal phone call while I am waiting.  That totally ticks me off.

Oh, let me count the ways...

some uses the phone next to you at a restaurant, or my personal favorite, is when I'm on a treadmill - the person next to me gets on the phone.

I have been to dinners where eveyone at the table is on the phone emailing or texting. We have replaced social interaction with our phone interactions. It's very sad.

I dont like making appointments with clients or realtors and having half the attention because they a texting or trying to figure out who's calling. You scheduled your time, call them back in a few. thats what I do.

im gonna take a bit of the other side of this equation, 1) you are selling him 2) he may (may) be doing business 3) if he is bsing..then you will not get his attention later. 4) i do meetings a lot during the day, as we all do. i say there are two ways to go,  A. treat everybody the same and take all calls that are business. 2. take none , when your busy. I feel a blog coming on...

That one bugs me Paul. I have a friend who cannot do two things at once. I will talk and he literally does not hear a word I'm saying. This is when we're walking down a street or having a drink. In a meeting? Put the phone away.

Once a mortgage broker did that to me. He requested the meeting, I made time for him; he picked up his cell calls and stayed on almost the entire time. That was the last time I talked to him... if that answers your question.

The blasted ring tones . . . set on high, and every other thing has a certain sound.  The text has one tone, the ring from their brother has another, the beep that they got a new response on some TWEET . . . STOP MAKING NOISES when we're in a meeting!!

I am especially annoyed when I am in person at a store or restaurant and the employee answers a phone and carries on a conversation.  Not just a "would you please hold", but they proceed to provide information while I stand there like I am not important.  If I had someone across the table who couldn't break away from the phone I would ask when a better time might be to actually discuss the topic at hand. Unless you have an ill family member phone belong on silent for the duration of a meeting.
