Another indicator of the general disintegration of society. Take the high road! Lead by your example and others may get the hint without a confrontation.

Paul,
I can't say that we run into people like that very often. Our clients are very savvy and nice. If I did, I would like Cindy Davis change the subject and move on. A

I'm constantly shocked by what passes for normal, acceptable, every day conversation. I'm not too sure when our standards were lowered. I'm fortunate in that my clients think more of themselves and of me, to use such language.

Given what I see on the news every day, nothing really surprises me any more. I try to relate to people as people and for the most part, leave everything else aside. I'm not perfect at it, but I will change the subject if I don't like the curent one!

Good Tuesday morning Paul. What is accepted speech on the silver screen greatly influences the masses. Get rid of all of the vulgar language that flows out of Hollywood, perhaps folks will clean up their own act.

Paul, I'm not always PC so I really don't expect it from my clients. OK, I do try to be PC around clients.
OK. I just reread the question - like the small print. I've never had a client do racial slurs or use sailor talk. When I think about getting overly PC, it's usually about people who are unglued about the Redskins changing their name. And this isn't a conversation that I would initiate while making small talk in a showing situation.

I don't like hearing it, Paul, but I don't hear it very often either. I don't know if it's my clients or that they simply watch themselves around me.

I do not engage in discussions abut politics. I try to change the subject.

Actually not so much. Once in a while, but mostly our clients are polite and we don't talk world issues or polictics, we talk real estate.

Always has bothered me. I will cringe when I hear it..they get the point and will usually curb any foul language. If it is racial, I might cringe and add, "you really didn't say that, did you; seriously? Did you realize you said that out loud?" Again, they get the point.
Set the standard of what you will tolerate and they will follow.

I agree, clients that use unappropriate language freely, bothers me, but I won't say anything unless children are around. It use to be women and children, but now some of the women are the sailors.

i suspect it depends on your POV. therefore it is better to go neutral unless you know your speaking to the choir

I try to tune it out. Most of the time they are respectful and don't overly use slang and expletives. I haven't noticed much slang when it comes to referring to ethic groups or minorities.

Yes it does bother me too, we have to be so carefull with our words and actions that it sometimes makes it difficult to be around people who are so careless.

I have found if I keep the level of conversation at a high level, they respond as best they are able.
At some point, in the face of blatant (not oblivious) disrespect and honor of other peoples I will need to address the issue.
If you stay in the pig pen you will get stink on you. So don't be to slow to move the direction of the dialog.

I don't mind sailor/trucker talk and have been known to throw the F bomb around myself - not with clients, it's simply not professional, but I don't care if that's how they choose to communicate. Some of the smartest people I know have the worst potty mouths. A hilarious former congressman, an appointee at HHS, a prestigious surgeon (who's wife was even worse!), come to mind.
Being in the Wash DC area political talk is part of everyday life here, so it's unavoidable. Most people are very respectful about political differences. Given the extreme diversity of the area, if they are racist/sexist/homophobic, they generally know better than to speak about it in business conversation.

as long as it's not anyone on my team who conducts him/herself in that fashion, it doesn't matter to me what others do...we can't control that....

Yes, I do sometimes and it's a challenging situation in terms of how we react to it. Years ago, as agents-in-training (so to speak), we were told to be mindful as to how we respond to politically incorrect comments as Federal agents might be doing stealth "spot checks" for potentially discriminatory comments or attitudes.

Yes. I can handle sailor talk but when I begin to hear slang or disparaging talk, I immediately tell them that I do not condone that kind of talk and I will not be around someone who does.
1,677,946
I really don't have that problem. I think people follow the lead of who they are around and I keep it clean and straight.

Paul, I try to avoid unethical people with different opinions criticizing others.
