When I lived in Montreal, an annual chimney sweep was included in our property taxes!  Never experienced it anywhere else and I thought it was such a great idea.

I only heat with my woodstove. I run hot fires and clean my chimney once a year.

Never!  But I've had it cleaned - by a sweep who showed up wearing an honest to gosh top hat!

I don't have one, but surprisingly my Buyers who have bought homes with a fireplace do want them inspected.

No, we don't use it enough to worry about cleaning it. It mostly a nest for chimney swifts every year.

Doyle,

In Houston I had a wood burning fireplace but it was too hot to use it.

Here in Colorado we have a gas fireplace we seldom use. Cleaning is a good idea.

Oh yes, at my cottage in the woods especially after using new wood to burn. But it's harder than it looks plus standing on the roof without guard rails.

Wow Susan Emo that is pretty cool!  I hired a chimney inspector and cleaner when I moved in 5 years ago.  I've used my fireplace MAYBE 8-10 times since then.  It is natural gas with fake logs, so no real dirt/soot is generated.  Haven't cleaned it since.

I would NEVER try to do it myself, but yes when I had a wood-burning fireplace, I did have it done yearly. Better safe then REALLY sorry!

personally? no.  But my husband does ours twice a year.  I watch while he is on the roof and leave when he gets out the shop vac for inside.  Hate the noise.
