When I researched this subject for my Epilogue of Ebenezer Scrooge book...the Christmas wish started out as Happy Christmas but during the lean times, happy did not apply. Later, Merry caught on making the point to enjoy whatever you had wherever you were for the sake of Christmas alone

Roger, when I was much younger I said Happy Holidays on my own.  When it became something to do because of being PC I changed to Merry Christmas.  I love the season and all the warmth and love it is supposed to represent.  Someone telling me how to express that, ticks me off.  Now days it is a very "Merry Christmas".  Look forward to your company through 2016.  Mark
