Like Candice A. Donofrio , I would prefer to know the median income.  Averages can be very skewed.  Thanks for the info Conrad.

It doesn't mean much in NYC/Westchester either.

But, the real q is the median.

Conrad - I guess for an average, that is pretty good.

However, like you said, I don't think you could get much in San Francisco or New York for $115,000.

Average means little if you live in an area like San Francisco, Manhattan or downtown Chicago!

Good morning Conrad. I wondered 115,000 in Frisco is equivalent to 53,000 elsewhere.

To get an average like this they must be including those who do not have jobs too.

Average doesn't mean much in real estate since all real estate is local.  Even the average price of a home in a neighborhood is meaningless due to age, size, community, mello roos, schools, traffic, view.  Same with income.  Some people feel wealthy making $30,000 while others feel poor with $500,000,000 ie the owner of the Oakland Raiders.

I have always wondered if the average includes the unemployed? To me, those in the service, etc. should be included also.

I suspect that the average is only those working in private sector jobs, and perhaps non-miliatry gov.

Wow, $53K is the average?   I believe that is a little bit higher than here in Tucson, AZ.  I have had many clients tell me about the housing market in San Francisco.  In fact, under contract now with first time home buyers who decided to buy several homes here in Tucson as investment properties vs one run down house for $700K there.

Nope I don't know but there are certainly regions where it's higher. Median may be more meaningful than a national average. The % of their income  people have to pay for housing varies  - I think it's especially high for Manhattan and San Francisco

THAT'S why median is more valuable to me as a rule than average. Averaging can skew the results if the list is top- or bottom-heavy.
San Francisco average HH is 105k and median is 77k. So they are not as screwed as we thought, just still screwed. LOL
