I do and I wrote a post about it.  In the comments I received, a Rainer pointed out that SOME folks are dyslexic or have other disabilities that can contribute  to this and SOME have computer glitch issues that cause problems with presentation.  After those responses, I try to be more tolerant of the human and electronic shortcomings of others and concentrate on their subject matter

Yes of course. I have to laugh because there was a popular blogger who would never proofread anything - then he decided to write a book! Yeah right.

There was a guy that would tell me that I made him nuts with the words 'thru' and 'through'. I called him the grammar police.

I seem to have a talent for finding errors in spelling or grammar, both in my own words and in others. What really boggles my mind are newspaper articles, online news reports or printed books that have something blatantly wrong. Don't they proof those things?

I'm not sure I think more negatively about someone who makes those mistakes, but I do start thinking that whatever I'm reading could be unreliable. If those mistakes were in a contract, I'd double check every bit of information.

David,

I think it reflects on our education system, which in California is bloated with overseers and red tape.  What we have forgotten here is that the student is the client.  We spend money on the administrators and forget to train the teachers.  And then, there are those who don't want to be corrected and taught, and get mad at you if you do, and there are those who appreciate the corrections.  A

Presentation does make an impact.  Everyone makes an occasional typo, but consistent errors suggest something else.  Lack of attention to detail or laziness come to mind, but some people are just terrible spellers.

I do tend to think negatively of a poorly constructed message.  It has to be a really good message to overcome the first impression.

Negatively is too strong a word.

With auto-correct and type-ahead, too often inadvertent stuff happens.

I will look at the fabric of the message. Great thinkers won't allow random caps and punctuation interfere with the mission. Others may allow such interference.

I would think it wise to respond to fIRE the same as you would fire.

Oooh, my pet peeve. It doesn't necessarily make me think negatively of them, but more a lack of attention to detail. A couple random errors I can understand, even though there is spell check and grammar check, but full on issues with spelling and grammar should always be checked or proofread.

I think either simple misspellings or the wrong choice of words in a sentence means to me that there was no proof-reading David Barr.  When this happens consistently throughout a paragraph, it's obvious that someone wrote too quickly, and their thought process was ahead of their fingers!

If it is a mailing or advertising to a client I have a second set of eyes look at it.

As to spelling in the recent past they were teaching that if it was phonetically spelled correct it was ok! As long as the point of the matter is there I overlook it.

It does make me question their attention to detail. That definitely makes me question whether they are a professional I would want to hire.

On the other hand, for me as a trainer, they are certainly a target client to teach how to better present themselves on and offline.

 Absolutely.

Maybe not for hair-splitting grammar like "who versus whom"... but it definitely leaves a bad impression when people use "there instead of their", or "your instead of you're".   Also, ending sentences with a preposition, such as "Where are you at?"

David Barr I grew up in that time when the did NOT teach phonics so spelling has always been a huge struggle to me and often I stump spell check BUT grammar has never been a problem to me. When I see a lot of grammatical errors I usually assume I'm communicating with an uneducated person or someone who uses English as a second language.
