John, having grown up in Tornado Alley, I totally appreciate the DC area's lack of drama when it comes to natural disasters.  The closest we come are big snows, and they are usually easy to be prepared for - lots of food, wine and firewood!

there is no answer here better than Roger D. Mucci 's..... whatever he does with the next "Big One," just follow his lead!!

We experienced this last week in Houston.  16" of rain overnight makes a huge mess.  And then it makes another mess when the overflow feeds into the reservoir.  Always, always, always have flood insurance.

Good advice for west coast dwellers.  Here along the Great Lakes our biggest natural disaster is major SNOW storm but most of the time that only happens in Buffalo.   Be safe John DL Arendsen 

Natural disasters are inevitable, I just hope that I'm not in the path of one.

I live in IL, there will be no 'big one'. We did have a funny commercial last year about tornado preparedness where the guy runs around screaming hysterically & then runs into a wall.  Then it just says 'have a better plan'.

We are from Southern California and while San Diego has not suffered severe earthquake damage in our lifetime there, we were living in Palm Desert for the Landers quake and can tell you that it is a scary event. We are now in Florida and preparing for hurricane season and ready if one comes our way.

Big WHAT is the question. I'm just as concerned in this day/age about 'unnatural disasters' . . . but being prepared for anything is pretty important. And very nice post.

John DL Arendsen I think it is something most think of but few prepare for. 

Both our state association and the Oklahoma City association have foundations that raise money for disasters as well as rallying the real estate community to volunteer for relief efforts. The preamble to the Code of Ethics talks about our responsibility to the community and we should take the preamble at its word.

Oh I hope we do not have one.

We should be ready, as if things happen, we have no control.

On the east coast, the weatherman alerts us when we have to prepare for snow storms or hurricanes.

No, we are not ready.  Definitely something we should do.

It is good to be aware and prepared for a Big One but not crippled and not able to enjoy life because of waiting and expecting it to happen.

    In Florida, we are prepared for Hurricanes, by keeping enough food, fuel, and water to last for several days.   But how do you prepare for an Earthquake?

We stay prepared year round here so it is just a matter of checking the supplies before hurricane season starts on June 1st.

I have some water and food that doesn't require cooking - I should always have a second bag of dog food. 

I sure was after the 1989 CA earthquake.  Not so much anymore. 

Some of my clients say, it is about time to get a big one, since they come kind of regularly. But it was the same with El Nino: a lot of talking and not a lot of rain in here. 

But you are right, it is better to be prepared and know what to do IF.
