Just that one mile off shore is considered international waters because that's the distance a canon ball can travel!  Useless in the real world, outside of a trivia contest!

How familiar am i with water law? I'm familiar enough to know that in parts of CO it's a very complex concept and as a broker we don't touch it with a 10-foot (or any other length) pole. We refer the client to their lawyer who will probably refer them to another lawyer (or set of lawyers) who specializes in water rights. Yes, I'm using the royal "we" here.

What benefits to becoming more familiar? Knowledge is always great! As far as interaction with the clients here in parts of CO, though, it just means you can have a more knowledgeable air about you as you refer them to their lawyer. Perhaps it would also be useful to be able to recognize the risks and issues faster so you can refer sooner in the process. Want bedtime reading, check out Title 37

Water laws are laws about water stuff.  Water law is only applicable when 2 atoms of Hydrogen and 1 atom of Oxygen are present together.  Becoming more familiar with water law makes you much more smarterer.

It is not clear exactly what you mean by "water law".  Are you referring to the ability of water companies to extract fresh water in bulk at a very inexpensive price from our great nation and sell it overseas?

Any time you can be more knowledgeable about a subject, it is a good thing. Don't  get too caught up in the word "law", though.  Leave that to the lawyers.
