If you've got a good camera on your phone, there's an app for that. I've also got a portable scanner the size of a 12" ruler. Battery operated and saves to media card. Have to roll it over the paper carefully but works well.

When in the office we use a few inexpnsive all in one units, when out of the office I have a phone app called Cam Scan that does an excellent job.

Samsung 6s.
Take a pic and let the software convert to any format you want.
Need more flexibility, send from phone to iFax and sort/merge/edit as you see fit.

Apps do not do as great of a job as Fujitsu ScanSnaps do.
I use it for paperwork, filing to Dropbox, and sending faxes when appropriate with EFax.
They produce ones that are IBM desktop compatible and MAC compatible the latter having an M in the product name. I have the S510 model which helps me stay organized and able to send faxes. I highly suggest.

I find I only use the scanner on my 4 in 1 printer when at home or the one in my office that the broker provides. When out with a client I use the Genuis Scan app on my phone and send them copies of the documents right on the spot. They love it.

I've seen some scanners that are mobile and feed the page through. Personally, I use a multi-function printer at my office with a document feeder.

I've used my iPhone to scan some stuff, like earnest money checks. But it wouldn't work for fine print!

CamScanner Pro is what I use, phone / iPad app with online access to stored documents from your Mac/PC. I've only had success with it (no quirkiness that I've noted) and can even use it to fax (extra per page fee) for those times when I have to fax something I've just snapped. I"ll still use my Epson all-in-one for scanning pictures and such, but so far the phone app works great for text documents.

The phone app is lame except in extreme circumstances.
I never wanted one & everyone that has one it seems they are very tempermental.

I go to my TITLE CO see what they use. At home office they sell a high end for like $100 all docs can quickly scanner and sent out....

Not portable however I have a Fujitsu fi-5015C
It is a work horse. I've had it for nearly 5 years ...no issues at all with it.

I have an all-in-one in my office and use my phone apps (Genius Scan and Tiny Scanner). I've heard the portable Fujitsu is a winner

Many genealogists use portable scanners. Check with your local genealogy society and see what they suggest. Evernote has a scanner app. Fujitsu ScanSnap S1100, Flip-Pal, Scannerpro by Readdle, DocScanner app, Neat, to name a few worth checking out.
