If you have no mutual friends and receive a friend request, check the profile. There's a miniscule chance it's someone you met and handed a business card at a busy function and forgot about. But, that probably isn't the case. 99% of those are fake accounts and you would be wasting your time accepting.

After looking at their profile, they only have one pic, about 20 friends, etc., delete as fast as you can - those are not the people they say they are and are highly likely scams.

But if they have some substance to their profile that is verifiable, then I stop and think about it because there is an agenda there that you don't know yet and often it is..... to sell you something. All of a sudden you will be part of group invites and group messages. Then... delete.

And the list of "what ifs" continues...

I have a business page that people can "like" and I don't need to know you! On my personal FB page I ignore,  it can cause hacking problems and scams if they aren't who they say they are.

I will just ignore them, as they are usually just fake accounts.  When I get a request from someone that I don't know, I look through their profile to try and figure out where I might know them from.  If I can't figure that out, I don't accept them as a friend.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. I've been doing a quick check to see who we had in common or if we had any past work or schools in common that perhaps I didn't recall. If I didn't find a connection, I just ignored them.  I assumed that they were working their own agenda, but I thought if anyone had an idea how to use this to our benefit, I'd learn it here.

Since my personal page is public with public settings, people can "follow" me without me approving them as "friends". If they are family, past clients, current clients, agents, brokers, community people like our mayor, people of influence, other fellow group members in groups I belong to,  etc, I approve them, of course.
