I learned when I was young, NEVER RUN, face them, step toward them and they will turn and run.  And it does not hurt to growl at them under your breath.

Even big guard dogs are cowards when approached right.

I teach this to my foresters for when dealing with Wolves and Bears, so far nobody has been eaten.

My father was once bitten by one.  After that he carried mace.

My take, carry dog treats and use those first before going to the mace/pepper spray.  Beyond that is really a personal call.  I'm not sure I could go further than that unless I was being actively mauled.

Why dog treats?  Because dogs love them and they taste better than we do (or at least better than I do).  It is also the #1 way crooks get around guard dogs, since very few dogs are trained to only take food from their master.

#1. Contact the first animal (dog) trainer you can find. Learn how to identify the friendly dog and the other kind. Know the visual signs. Rottweilers do not announce their intent.

#2. Pay attention

#3. Measure the value of the effort. If the house looks like Sam's post, you may choose to skip this one.

#4. When door knocking I have the luxury of taking Sasquatch along. His role is to intercept all distractions. He has mowed the grass while I talk to the owner, played catch with the kids and allowed the dogs to jump on him and not me. His presence has a way of moderating how some curmudgeons choose to respond.

Depends on the dogs and the location. Avoid putting yourself in those type of situations. Running might not be good idea. Try to stay calm. They might just want to lick you and get petted. Dogs bark and that doesn't mean they are mean. if they don't bite, let them smell you, slowly pet them, tell them to sit, etc.

Wow!!  I'm wondering why the homeowner didn't 'have control' of their 2 dogs - why they chased you, with that person watching?  Very scary Jenny Ho.  They could have told you their dogs were not friendly and that they didn't want your hand-outs, as opposed to having you think that they were going to attack or bite you.  To me this means the owner was 'not in control' - the dogs were.

If you have the time grab any aerosol-type in your purse and spray it in their face. Aim for the eyes but they hate it in their nose too so accuracy isn't critical.Hairspray works almost as well as mace as long as it's an atomized spray (not pump).

If you are at the owner's front door, be as brave as you can.

If you are walking down the street carry some type of protection.  I know people have Mace, Bear Spray or Wasp Spray.

Keep in mind that the dog's owner probably won't want to list with you if you spray his dog.

Good luck.

I love coffee & real estate. I am out of coffee!

Don't go back :) Seriously, glad that's over. Others have said it, you have to be confident (I know that's hard) but that's your best defense against a barking dog. Most, that's all they are is all bark, no bite. But for the few who will attack, your odds are better being strong about it. SHOW YOUR TEETH!
