Hasn't happened. But two things: 1. RE is local. 2. Reality television is made for your entertainment, it is not made for your buying or selling situation. (They probably have that fine print somewhere in there, too...)

Terrific!  Have you tried "The Walking Dead" or "iZombie"?  They have great entertainment value too!

I would say I enjoy watching some of the shows too to compare it to real life real estate. Even real estate agents like a little fantasy and a way to escape.

(groan)  Just helped a seller this week that insisted that between the info he got from Zillow on marketing time and the public tax record, that he would make an offer based on acquisition cost on the part of the seller and what my buyer believed to be his cost of improvements.  Nevermind that the offer was $30K below what I told him was market value.  

Since he wasn't hearing me, reality sank in when the seller didn't even respond or counter.  His second offer was definitely more serious.  Why?  He listened to his agent.

We all know the trut!  I always think to myself, "They will find out the hard way",  but I just smile and make a nice comment.  No sense arguing.

I just laugh it off with a "that's not real, it's television".

Fred Griffin This is funny and I feel for you. Tell her you will only show her three houses and she has to buy one of them just like they do on HGTV.

I'd explain how scripted those shows are and also explain that real estate is very local, so what she saw on HGTV in one area might not apply to ours. Thus far, the only comments I've had about HGTV is that they watch it and know it's important to stage a home properly.

I enjoy HGTV, too - when I need a little comic relief from the REAL world of real estate.  Although those Property Brothers are awfully yummy.

They need us for a rational look at the market..back to real sold figures and reality!!

Unfortunately, reality TV is so real!  

It happens to stagers as well.  I usually let them talk and then when they see the smile on my face, most of them realize that HGTV is television and we're in the real world. 

I never experienced too many clients who contradicted me....I don't have patience for it and it came through loudly and clearly, in my own not so subtle way!!!

My father  tells me all the time what he saw on some HGTV show as if he is offering me advice. I keep telling him it's scripted and they aren't filming in real time. 

Step away from the TV and back into real life.

There is reality and then there is TV. What does your seller want?

I've never met anyone that dedicated to HGTV yet, thankfully. I do get comments here & there, but I think many are starting to realize how make believe even HGTV is...hence "TV".

I just look at them and say, you know that is just a TV show, right?  It's a story, for ratings and money.

Let's get real...

It's a discussion about what is really happening in our current market. 

Sellers need us to give them the through, not the media hype.

I try to explain to the that the shows are made for television and that a lot of it is not realistic.

I just explain that we live in Kenosha, WI ... that I've been buying and selling real estate for 22 years successfully, and that we live in the "real world of real estate" -- and that HGTV is great for entertainment but that you can't depend on everything you hear and see on those programs -- if you do you will not be playng with a fair deck when it comes time to negotiating, etc.  That's where I come in!  

It happens all the time Fred. I try to just deal with it and not let it show.

I think you have to just smile 

It is just an entertainment show.

Trust me or you want to trust Hollywood.

I like what some members suggest.  Show 3 houses in an hour and have the buyers select one to buy.

It's scripted.

Hi Fred - I'd rather strangle myself with a necktie (if I could still find one) than listen to that.

I explain to them how staged reality TV really is.  Heck, one episode of Flip or Flop, they were working on a house and made it seem like a quick flip... only thing was when the episode started Christina told Tarek "I'm pregnant" and by the end when the open house was on, she was close to being due!

All of those shows are scripted.  Even Storage Wars had the producers hiding items in each of the lockers once purchased.  The reality is much different.

Luckily, I'm involved with flippers and know how the real world actually works, so I can "educate the educated."

TV shows and the real life are two different worlds. My wife and I watch all the home improvment and cooking shows (if the Blackhawks are not playing).

I get a kick out of "Love it or List it", when they show they spent $80,000 to improve their house and now the value has gone up $120,000!! Only on TV.

It amazes me how they think this show is so turn. 

HG TV is very popular, and you can learn new and interesting things from the different shows.  I haven't yet had a client want to 'educate me about every show and every character' Fred Griffin.  I wouldn't think they had seen 'it all' pertaining to real estate, just by being a fan though, and, they are not seeing the true time and effort and cost involved in some of the projects.  And what is 'staged' for the public's interest?  Seeing the 'Before & After' is not the complete story! 

When did she start believing everything on TV?  Before or after I dream of Jeannie?

Yes that it is not real and some is staged. I tell them about a show base don a neighbor buying a lake home all filmed after they had already close, including looking at homes they were never going to buy, because they already closed. 

It will most likely only get worse. Grin. Bear it. And, move forward.

Fiction is fiction and reality is reality. Want reality to go wrong, base it on fiction!

I get this quite often - in fact those people who do the flipper show are advertising to do seminars in the area.

I even share my personal experience with a program that featured a property here in Dunedin FL.  The agents involved and those of us watching could see there is nothing real in a reality show.

But real estate agents are perceived to have an agenda therefore not being fully honest. Even when the 'silience' becomes reality, they see conspiracy. In one case, the buyer purchased a FSBO, to prove their point, at great expense.  You bet your A$$ that sale was used in every agents local comps.

"I showed them!" is the buyers claim to victory.

Well for one thing they are not interpreting things correctly. Is a TV show real life? I think not & it's been proven that most of those programs are ironically 'just staged'.

Share the facts they need to make a good decision.

i think they all know that reality television is fiction, just need to remind them that nothing they see on tv is anything but make believe
