A porte-cochere is a covered entrance for driving through or parking under with access to the front door of a home.  I recently had a listing that had one and everyone thought it was classic.  Here is a photo that shows part of the driveway and gives a visual.

I think that is the covered entranceway where the carriages drop off and pick up their passengers.
