I believe it's where Cinderella kept her pumpkin.  Temporarily, of course.  I mean -- it's a fairy tale.

It's what I had in my 19th century apartment building in Paris at 85 Avenue Henri Martin. Unfortunately, I never had any horse and carriage to drive under it!

Here porte-cocheres are not unusual. The covered area for car-to-building entry is a design feature on many of our luxury homes.

Isn't it the covering connected to a house and over a circular driveway so people can exit in the rain w/o getting wet?

Yeah! I actually know one! It is a covered driveway and porch!

A porte-cochere is a covered entrance for driving through or parking under with access to the front door of a home.  I recently had a listing that had one and everyone thought it was classic.  Here is a photo that shows part of the driveway and gives a visual.   

It must be a port for your cochere.

Covered side entry for the horse & buggy or a car.

a covered coach port in front of the a mansion.  Over the years it became a car port as horses are not used.

I think that is the covered entranceway where the carriages drop off and pick up their passengers.
