Astra is a latin word meaning "to the stars".  So, it is logical to deduce an astragal is a gal (woman, girl, lady) who is to the stars... or something very special!!!  

I know that isn't construction related, but I had to say it.  LOL

this is a rounded piece of molding and TODAY it's often used on double closet doors to finish off the middle space left after the door close.... it's attached to the edge of one door and when the other door closes first this door will cover where the two doors meet in the middle...and that piece is called an astragal....

when God was a child, it was used on ornamental columns.....

Yes, I am married to a man that has sold doors for 50 years and he throws this term around with other door terms like escutchon, strike, rail, core, hand, mortise, etc. I believe I could sell doors now.

It's a strip of vertical molding on one of a pair of double doors. It closes any gap between them.

Normally, an unrealistic seller would have astronomically inflated pricing.  I would say that Astragal would be so far fetched that instead of just being in the night sky, it would be as inflated as the galaxy!
