I guess it would depend if there was a flag on display.
Title 36, Chapter 10 PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS
§171. National anthem; Star-Spangled Banner, conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

I don't see people get off the couch or barstools before a game starts on TV. Maybe that's a personal choice when you are not actually present at the game? Just read Richard Weeks comment and the word "present" is the deciding factor it seems.

That's a hard one to answer, as I've never come across this issue. But I suppose I would stand and put my hand over my heart the way I would in other venues.

If a flag was on display, I would act accordingly. If no flag, I would respectfully put my fork down and fold hands on lap.

I would stop eating & put my hand over my heart. Probably not stand depending on table situation.

I had no idea how to handle this. Once we recognized the tune we swallowed, put our forks down, looked around and sat quietly. Nobody else seemed to notice it was playing. I will know next time.

Definitely an odd situation. The presence of a flag would definitely be my deciding factor. And, of course, since the scenario involves clients, follow their lead. Doesn't matter if there is a flag, if they stand I'm standing. No use offending someone.

I am the wife of a soldier. I'd place my napkin on the table and excuse myself and stand with my hand over my heart. It's my DNA

The local country station here in DC plays the national anthem every day at noon so it is not a unique problem - and you are asking a good question. When I hear the national anthem on the radio when I am driving, I usually sing along... not sure what I would do if the station was being played in a restaurant at noon - Although those of us who live in Maryland do like to belt out the "O" in honor of the Orioles - you can always tell a Baltimore fan at a sports event - the contingent supporting Michael Phelps in Rio did it during the Star Spangled Banner when he won one of the many races during the Olympics - made him crack up during the awards ceremony .... Sorry this is such a long answer!

Depends - if the client stood I would stand - other wise I'd go on with the meal
I don't stand when I see it on TV either, I only stand when I am at an event

I would at a minimum stop eating, place my hand over my heart and sit in silence as the song played.

Wow Debbie, this is a question! If others stood I would too. The least I would do is quit eating and put my hand over my heart.

I guess it wouldn't matter why it was being played, but I'm wondering why. I would stand in respect.

Ii am out eating I am not doing anything. This is a little different than beng at a sporting event.
3,986,258
HMMMM...I am not sure, But stopping for a second to bow my head may be in order.
3,727,873
I've never had that happen. And do people get up from their couches at home when they are watching the game and the Star Spangled Banner plays?
3,587,835
Debbie I've never run into this - kind of odd to playing it in a restaurant. I probably would get up - just depends on the situation.

I can't say I've ever heard the radio play the national anthem. Not sure what I'd do or if I'd even notice, honestly, I usually don't pay much attention to background music.
