LOVE LOVE LOVE AirBnB! I usually use it when I travel to NY to visit my daughter. My husband and I travel around the state and stay at either an AirBnB or a VRBO. There are so many options, we always have our own unit. We went to Florida last year and got a beautiful one bedroom condo on the water for $89 per night. Did I mention that I'm a big fan?

In reading Kathleen Daniels response, it seems there might be a misconception that you are sharing someone's home. While that is sometimes true, I have never done that and don't think I would. We get residences that are totally stand-alone - condos, one-bedroom apartments, little houses - places where no one else lives or shares the unit.

Fred,

Like with everything else, I have heard both sides of the equation.  Cities like Santa Barbara are levying tourist tax on homes like hotels pay, the same is true in the Napa/Sonoma wine country.  So that has created a slow down in buying properties to rent as hotels.  Personally, we would not rent a bnb on a trip.  We have rented apartments through a vetted apartment rental in Paris, and that was absolutely the best.  A

I haven't used Air B&B, but a client of mine has.  She had a miscommunication over a booking and the would-be visitors raised such a ruckus they threw her off temporarily.  I could make a huge bunch of money during the inaugural, except I have a bunch of cousins coming to town for the march the day after. It will be crowded and really fun.  My family is wonderful fun.

Fred, I use VRBO because I look for one week stays typically. I also have a VRBO rental in Florida that is weekly minimum and Airbnb brings me next to nothing.

I have not.  I know some people who almost exclusively use it.  They have loved it and 99% of the experiences were great, 1% was just "good."

Personally, not my cup of tea.  I prefer a nice 4 star or higher hotel with concierge service or a nice bed and breakfast (at least in theory, haven't done that yet) or even a botique hotel.  Stayed in a great botique hotel in Montreal several years back.

I also don't dig the idea of roommates, let alone strangers in my house.  It is highly unlikely that I'd ever rent a room out.

I have someone in an AirBnB right now!  Finding rentals that will allow for month-to-month until Closing for our buyers is impossible and staying in a hotel is not the same as having a home in which you can cook your own meals as well.

If you have someone moving to the area and not sure which community is best for them - it's also a great way to check out the neighborhoods!

I have not used but do know some people who have. For some it has been perfect but when things go wrong, one had their place trashed by a party and the other, the renters would not leave. The police did not deem them tenants but hotel guests and removed them, but it took a while to get paperwork to prve that. A friend in florida, had people that stayed a month late and could not get them out until oen day they drove off and he changed locks. I havent used it myslef, i may if i knew for sure it was clean.

Interesting mixed bag of attitudes and philosophies on this thread Fred Griffin Even more interesting are the folks who've never tried it yet poo poo it. Personally, we've stayed in some of the best hotel resorts in the World and had terrible experiences.

By default we ended up having to default to B&Bs whence traveling through Southern Ireland because hotels where we traveled were scarce and not up to our expectations.

Subsequently is has launched a whole new era in our real estate investing experience and the primary motivator for our journey in acquiring vacation (VRBO) properties.

Granted we have never air b&b'd or VRBO'd our primary residence but with all the positive experiences we've been having during the past several years I'm tempted to try a little Air B&B-ing as long as we're home. We would never consider VRBOing it, however.

It's not that we need the income from our primary residence. It's more about the experience and the interesting and exciting folks you meet. Call me stupid but I truly believe that most folks are good and mean well. Until we've had some bad experiences I'm all in on this cottage industry.

BTW, we started using UBER last year as well and love it!

I love the Idea.

I love the concept.

Like ALL revolutionary ideas that put autonomy in the hands of the owner, governing forces don't like it.

I personally have neither offered or acquired lodging via AirBnB.

However, I have engaged MANY 'sharing economy' individuals who do so on a regular basis. Here in coastal Florida. AirBNB has become the option for those looking for an affordable lodging choice for their family vacation. The governing forces want these families to seek lodging at the Sheraton.

Just like the battle with Uber and Lyft, the AirBnb opposition is rooted in a power struggle which is actually a money grab all under the guise of public safety.

NOTE: Uber prevailed in the local battle and the Public Transportation Commission exposed as so corrupt that this organization will be dissolved.

PS: When you get a chance to chat with an AirBnb user, it would be a premium opportunity to do a little market research regarding the empowerment sought by those participating in the sharing economy.
