You can change the theme and the content will remain.
However, the format may be completely wrecked.
Paid themes typically include capabilities not found in other themes. It should be clear, such capabiliites and plug-ins may require a restart.
So the answer is, "IT DEPENDS."

What Annette Lawrence , Palm Harbor, FL 727-420-4041 said.
Any customization you do to create a "child theme" will need to be redone. Any special configurations in your PHP scripts related to the theme will run the risk of being useless on the new theme, or worse yet, cause issues.

Nathan Gesner, you'll want to purchase a well-supported premium theme. As Annette Lawrence , Palm Harbor, FL 727-420-4041 pointed out, if you switch themes, your formatting could be all wonky.
Also, you'll want to purchase a theme that has a child theme. You'll activate the child theme and that's where you'll add your custom CSS code. That way, when the theme has updates, you won't have to re-do all your CSS.

It depends. Many free themes are not supported by the person(s) that created them. Paid themes are usually a better choice. Some adjustments may be needed after switching, but it's not usually a lot.

Yes, it's very simple to do so once you understand WP - I have dozens of these sites

In most cases, yes. Though, there may be some cleanup with the display that will be required.

Nathan Gesner - not an expert at this - though I find no reason why not.
The only concern I see here is, will new theme accommodate the content?
5,230,113
Yes, you can change it but, you'll have some re-formatting to do. Sometimes it's far too much to take on yourself but, other themes are fairly easy to convert. Back up the current theme/site before trying a new theme. Good luck, Nathan Gesner!

Nathan - Just as I suspected, sounds like you can change themes and all your info will remain, but the look (formatting) may need some fixing.

Sure, but with all changes you will need to deal with a few adjustments.

Yes. In most cases the formatting will need to be fixed. It does not translate perfectly but the content is there.

Yes but some things might get a little skewed. At any time you can back up your content on a WP site too.
