2. As a real estate Broker? Put the Realtor's needs first.

3. As a mortgage broker? Put the borrower's needs first, then the Realtors.

Always do the right thing should be top of the mind awareness for anyone in service.

Most brokers believe that whatever brings the dollar in is "the right way".

The problem is that most brokers don't have any wisdom...

I'm not sure if my answer is what you're looking for, but everything being cyclical, the 'new ways' may begin to crack under the weight of 'too much noise' and I think the 'old ways' will reemerge and it's going to knock a few on their collective butts.
Examples: belly to belly appointments over chat bubbles, personal introductions over internet leads, landing pages and gold stars, personalized one-on-one service over impersonal teams, and probably most important, offline broker listing portfolios over syndication vomited all over aggregator's sites . . .  and I could go on.
I have a friend who is creating a new business model that I find pretty exciting, and I'm hard to impress. I can't reveal further, but I will be willing to invest in it. First intelligent thing I've seen in 10 years or longer.

I will agree that the reverse of everything we NOW know may very well become the norm in a few short years or sooner. 

For me the right way is to always assume no one is going to do their job except me.

I recognize there are many different ways to do things ... and get things done. I live in a world of exactly the opposite of how I do business as many agents do not respond to emails and phone calls and are hard-pressed to complete a contract "correctly".  

In the end it boils down to knowing ones craft and living by the Golden Rule for me.

To me it means being courteous, acting ethically and legally at all times and providing the same level of customer service that I would expect for myself and my family - basically, The Golden Rule.

The right way is how you would like to be treated in all phases of the transaction.

Conventional wisdom and "doing things the right way" means different things to different people. Those terms are considered "old school" language by many nowadays. Doing things the right way consists of the sum of honesty, service and helping others without greed and thinking of yourself first. Wisdom, convential and unconventional, is fast becoming a lost art. I'm fairly sure that there are many right ways of doing this business, as well as some wrong ones.

I think the RIGHT way is one without short cuts. For me i have a unwritten list of task for listing clients and another for buyer clients. It is often easier to say what is the wrong way and that is a lack of communication, guessing instead of finding the right answer, telling a client what they want to hear instead of what is right.

What does the "right way" mean? I do things ethically and legally. Beyond that it's my choice to what degree and how I service my clients. That's one reason we are considered independent contractors. Someone else's right way might not be mine. And I've also often wondered what is "conventional wisdom" and how do we prove it?

Annette - To make it simple, the right way is acting in the best interest of your client by providing excellent service, industry knowledge, and negotiating skills to close the transaction. As a Broker, be a resource for your agents, and help them with their business development. As a mortgage broker, be honest, find the best mortgage program for your client, and get the loan funded.

It depends what you consider conventional. Are you asking what is common practice, what is being taught in ethics and professional standar classes or what is the actual outcome or result?

I believe in the Code of Ethics as a way of handling things the "right way" in our profession.

 Provide excellent service.

I'd say "do your job" and "treat everyone fairly and with respect."

It is sad but true that I agree with Richard Weeks' answer! In addition to that I always strive to make sure I go above and beyond to help my clients and to do things according to the letter of the law!

Law abding, never to take short cut get one into hot water like getting one's license revoked.  These days MLS, broker have little control. People have short fuse go to State BRE file a former complaint legit or not... 

Broker have more exposure have more liability than agents and ditto on loan agent.
