When I post sub-comments, I try to @ the name so notice is automatically sent. For many here in AR, the option to use a @ is not available and I don't know why this happens.

I would like to use them, they keep the conversations together. However Active Rain does not incentivize their use. There is the issue with notification like Roy mentioned and there are no points issued for comments in the sub section on blog posts.-Kasey

For the longest time, that is how I responded to others' comments - I found out from Liz and Bill Spear and Tammy Lankford, that those comments (even when you tag someone) are NOT sent as notifications. Someone would have to intentionally come back to your post to actually see it.
That's why the conversations weren't going anywhere! If you start a new comment, they ARE notified when tagged. It's a pain and interferes with the conversation but, that's how it works! Hope this helps, Brian England!

I use them but not alot and have no strong feelings either way. I try to always tag the other person so they are, hopefully, notified. Sounds like that's a problem for you Brian England Sorry to hear. Some sort of glitch?

You can put the @ symbol & tag the person if you want. I like them.
If you don't get any notifications you can go to blog settings & keep scrolling down to a bunch of features. You can check or uncheck for emails there.
You can also hover over the grey flag up top on the right & that tells your notifications.

I like them here in the Q&A, because I think we get notified here. However even tags are not enough to get a notification in the sub comments on a blog so I don't use them. I keeping it gets fixed because I like the idea of a thread within a comment because sometimes a blog post will inspire a new direction in the comments and I believe many could/would benefit from those conversations, but when they are comments apart they are hard to follow even if you read ALL the comments.

Sub-comments.
I deliberately intend to deliver the real fabric in responses to the comments that are generated. Of course that just the way I am.
You should receive notification three ways, the flag adjacent to your name, in the stats and points section appearing in the pull down to the right of your image. I would examine your AR settings to find where you have disabled notifications.
And clearly you have a desire to have a proper level of AR etiquette by acknowledging those who acknowledging you.
