I'm good with just owning the .com. Thought about buying all the others for my own name, but that gets pricey quick with zero benefit other than preventing them from being bought. I wouldn't even bother with a 301, just leave the page unhosted and save some $$ that way.

The most recognizable URL has a dot.com. At first we did buy all the other stuff to prevent copy cats from doing that. With certain brands we do recommend, particularly if they are very unique. Some companies buy the mispelled version of their name...we do redirect only one of our domains to our main site. On the subject of SEO, I would have to ask our expert. A

You don't need them all. If you want another real estate site, then I might get the dot com and dot net. Only other one I would consider right now is the dot blog which is managed by wordpress. Possibly a dot biz for some businesses. If I was an interior decorator, I might get dot com and dot design. Won't help much wtih seo. lots of changes in the works. Also, too many redirects can slow your site speed way down.

I do not buy them all ... I just don't see the real need for it. SEO will happen with great content and linking on any site.

Gets too onerous Fred. Trying to keep up and economically makes no sense. It's not what you have, it's what you do with it.

I know that godaddy always suggests this & it's a bunch of hooey. I've had to take a .net for my name because someone has the .com. I'm not going all crazy.
For a corp I would do it but just the big 3.

At first we did it so no one else would get them. But there are laws in place preventing people from using deceptively similar urls to draw traffic away. So it's really not necessary, although you may have to write C & D letters to an uninformed competitor or 2.

I have a few .info URLs but mostly just .com. Not sure it's worth the money to buy all possible combinations for a single URL. But some wiser folks may have other opinions

I took .net on my personal name and on the business name. .org doesn't matter to me since I'm a profit company. The .net was just for protection but I think it doesn't matter anymore.

I don't really feel the cost justifies the return for this tactic.

I do not unless they are personal - my name and business name for example - otherwise no
And AFAIK redirects do nothing for SEO

No, but I wish I had. There is another real estate company with the same name as mine but they have the ".co" and I have ".com" and it ticks me off that they are even allowed to do it. I don't lose business from it, but I get a lot of emails from people that are trying to write them and instead write me.

There was a time I thought I needed a bundle of urls. I got several and the redirect fees mounted up. I am cutting back on all of that and focusing on good SEO.

Fred we did not buy all of them and don't think we even considered it. Way back when we did buy a bunch of seo minded domains with grand ideas but putting them into play wasn't so easy - or necessary either.

I stopped at Dot Com because that's the only one you want. You never want to use .biz, .net, or .org because when they see SaintFrancisProperty.biz, they will write .com into their browser and I will never see them. Let the bottom feeders waste their money on all the copy cat stuff.
