Funny you ask.  I ran a competative analysis on sales and listings for my county.  What I found was that there were almost 1000 different agents with at least one side of a transaction.  Of those, the top 25 did the vast majority of the biz. 

We have 145 agents in my MLS. The top 20 agents are responsible for more than half of the sales in the past year. The top 8 agents are responsible for 20% of all sales.

I do not know the exact number, but there are much more agent and people with RE license in L.A. than anyone else. It is too easy to get a license. 

Do I consider a part time or a new agent a serious contender? Not at all. 

Here in Charlotte, we have 10,000 in our MLS and I think the typical 80/20 rule applies here. You have transactions with the same agents often...some you hate to see coming!

I am actually in a transaction right now - I was the listing agent on the other side of her first transaction a couple of months ago and I'm now the listing agent on the other side of the transaction for her SECOND deal! She's motivated and hard-working - and I've enjoyed both deals with her!

3228 members in our MLS as of just now when I looked.  As of today 955 have sold $1M or more volume in 2017.  352 have sold $2M or more to date. 162 have sold $3M+. 89 have sold $4M+. 52 $5M+. 32 $6M+. 19 $7M+. 13 $8M+.  8 $9M+.  7 $12M+

I know you didn't ask for all of that, but since I looked it up I was interested.

Our association gives awards for agents that sell $2M or more per year in an area where median prices are $250k in one county and $175k in another county to give you an idea. -Kasey

Unknown.  Close to a couple thousand board members, but who knows how many non-practicing licenees there are.  CA is supposed to have more than any other state.

Probably close to 10,000. We are pretty much along the 80/20 rule where 20% make 80% of the money here. 

About 80% don't do any regular business, just buy or sell for family every few years.

Over 45,000 are members of the local board.  There are even more who are not members.

We have 22,300+ members of our San Diego MLS - likely some are outside the county/affiliates.  There are about 6,000 in our North San Diego County Board. Not sure about serious contender numbers, probably 90/10 rule

There are about 3500 in Middle TN. 20% are contenders in our market either with sellers or buyers.

It's most always the 80/20 or 90/10 rule in many areas.

We are up to 2000 - that is over where we were during the 2006 boom.

In Massachusetts, we have roughly 24,000 active licensees. How many actually work full-time I do not know

Last I heard about 18000.  Probably 20 are contenders.

In Austin, we have 10,000+ in our MLS and as always the typical 80/20 rule applies here. We have stagers, inspectors etc. in our MLS so numbers are a little skewed.

Here in Northern Virginia, we are around 11,000 paying members, but of those the 80/20 rule applies.

About 2000 licensees.   Maybe 200-300 are contenders.

Santa Clara County, CA has about 20,000 licensees/brokers.  But the two local realtor county associations do not have a combined of 10,000 active agents.

The entire SF Bay Area has over 90,000-120,000 realtors/brokers. Most loan sharks and lawyers are also mostly licensed as brokers.  I validated with the State the number listed above is about right.
