There are many who mistakenly think Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day.

College students love celebrations of any type! One fraternity that hosted a big party to celebrate on May 5th was hit with criticism of cultural insensitivity for changing the name to:
CINCO DE DRINKO

Yes. I know a lot a Mexicans out here who don't give a hoot about it. It's mostly celebrated by white people needing an excuse to get drunk. The same people who are "Irish for a day" on St. Patrick's Day are "Mexican for a day" on Cinco de Drinko.

It all started to sell more beer! I have had a home I Mexico for 12 years and it is a much bigger deal in the US than in Mexico.

We had a taco party last night at our house. We don't normally make a point to celebrate it but it fell on a Friday so we had the neighbors over. -Kasey

I was in Mexico several years ago on May 5th and there was very little hoopla, probably just from the Americans. The Mexicans seemed to not notice.
