The world has gone nuts.  How can a man who OWNS the home be fined for wearing HIS shoes in it?  The nerve of the tenant who dared to bring suit.  That's insane.

Well, apparently he also violated the 24 hour notice rule so hard to say if the fine is only about not removing shoes. But that being said, $12K seems a bit egregious and unfortunately, I could see this happening here... I've said it many a time that our courts have gone bonkers and have lost all sensibility.

Canada is slowing learning that you cannot just allow certain classes of people into your country without fully vetting them. I wonder how much free help these people got from Canada. Beware of anyone whose religion tells you that you do not have to obey the laws of the counrty you are in.

Before you become a landlord, find out what your rights are. That and screening. Too many landlords have a soft spot who then get taken advantage of. My feeling? As soon as he realized these tenants were trouble, just wait out their leaving, THEN rent it. Worth it in the long run. Do I think the $12,000 is excessive? It doesn't matter what I think, the courts didn't think so.

That sems a little over the top to me.

I have doctors orders that I'm not allowed to walk around barefoot (true story).  I think ANY fine is overkill and this should not have been an issue as they are in HIS house.

Overkill and then some.  People using religion as a basis to take advantage of others are the scummiest of the scum.

Unbelievable. I had a tenant that did something similar to this and was under investigation for two years before being cleared. She still harasses me online three years later.

Either this story is missing something or this judge ought to be slapped.

I think it is over kill. Here in the US the days of political correctness gone crazy has been tuned way down. Respect and rights are 2 different things

That is taking an extreme approach and will only result in backlash by all landlords.

Someone wanted to make an example and he was it.  He could have had new carpet installed for less! 

Landlords in the USA and Canada need to UBER-ize their business.

What I mean is, like UBER, create a mechanism to RATE tenants and share that rating only with those who subscribe to the service.

Those tenants who choose to litigate create the only outcome which is now they must become OWNERS if they want a roof over their head.

And like Yelp and ZIllow, freedom of speech is the principle upon which the service is based.
