It's really simple.... really it is.
Writing quality content will bring readers... readers will comment on your posts and want to "follow you". When you see who your readers are you can visit their blogs, and comment on their pages. Participation is key.
Once people, learn who you are, they'll start following.
Good luck, and welcome.

I've found interaction, or the "active" part of AR to be the best way to get something out of it. The more quality content you write, the more people will notice. The more you engage with others, the more reciprocation you'll see.

I follow the members who follow me or comment on my blogs.
Post ten blogs each week, a reblog every day, follow five additional members each day and comment on at least twenty blogs each day and you will gain followers on a regular basis.

I "commented" here for about 3 years before I ever wrote the first blog post and by the time I did write that first post, I had a bunch of people commenting and subsequently following me - why? Because I became "active" in the community before I ever posted.
I certainly would not suggest that as a way to start - LOL - but just as an illustration to say interaction with others, commenting on their posts, following them, will lead to more involvement. Writing quality posts will gain you loyal followers, both here in the Rain as well as from the public.

Luke Acree ... Yes as long as you like the material of who you follow. When I see that some body has decided to "follow" my blog, I check theirs out. If it's interesting and thoughtful, I'll subscribe. I have unsubscribed to blogs that are difficult to follow or read. I don't get much out of recipes (although some I have enjoyed). I go other places for that.
If your blog is written in 8pt font, or every line is centered (vs. left index) I find those too difficult to read, and unsubscribe. BTW I like your Starbucks post but it could use a larger font!
Like everybody else says before me... It comes down to content.

Interact with others --
thoughtfully comment on the posts of others, answer their questions.
Unlike some members, I don't just follow those who follow me but that's a strategy that must work for others. It's difficult for me to reciprocate with those who already follow me.
Members who have interesting content and are consistently engaged in this forum will typically get my attention eventually.

Follow members that amuse you or provide useful information. Once you follow someone, they are notified and receive points. Most folks will run over and follow you in return. Getting involved with the community is the best way. To get points, follow 5 new members a day. This will also broaden your horizons emmensely.

Everyone below has the best answers Luke Acree. Writing Blogs and asking questions in the Q & A Section and finally replying back to other's comments, either on your Blog or on your Question. That way you get to know others, and they get to know you! You will find many professional, knowledgeable people on AR, who are willing to share and help. I'm no longer a Newbie here, even though I still am to real estate, and not only learn from fellow AR'ers, but enjoy them alot, too! Good Luck.

Luke Acree One easy option is to follow as many people as possible. When they get the message you are following them, many of them will follow you back. Scroll to the bottom of any page and look on the right-hand side for "Membership" roster. Start following a page of people a day or as many as you'd like.
The other option is to interact with people on their blogs or Q&A. Every time you make a comment, be sure to follow them. A lot of them will follow you back. I have about a 30% success rate.

Luke,
I reviewed your last two Active Rain blogs. These blogs had NO CONTENT. The video perhaps did but your opportunity to get me to click was an opportunity you lost because you did not provide the proper inspiration.
At the very least provide three bullet points about what I will learn if I click.
Your real question, "How to get followers?"
Make folks smarter as the result of reading. You have a great advantage by being 'unencumbered' with the real estate agent mindset. There is hope you can actually bring fresh thought into the environment.
So, stop riding the last horse and choose to be controversial.
What I mean is engage in the conversation folks are already having. Getting into their conversation and adding your perspective and why your perspective matters.
Folks are drawn to the clear sound of the tolling bell, but not to the bell that rings every day at noon. Get my point?
DO not get into the I'll follow you if you follow me tail chase.
So what happens when you you get 2,000 followers and are following 2000 agents? Nobody reads anybody blog.
Let me prove what I say. I follow four. How many followers on AR could you guess I have and yes, if you want I can exclude Mom, Sister and my cat in the total.

Building a following takes time. Write a lot. Comment on lots of other posts - people will often return comments which means they'll be exposed to what you write and hopefully will like what they see. Follow people whose writing you like - I always check out the blogs of my new followers.
