Changed my address.
Becoming 'HOUSE POOR' is a precarious perch on a house of cards.
In the end I came to realize those occupying my childhood hometown were no longer people I could call 'my peeps."
Time changes things, not always for the better.
The good news is, no one has to listen to me begin...."I remember when this was a two line road ........"

Not priced out . . . blighted out. Where I grew up was so rural and idyllic . . . now it is a chaotic mess. Handled it by moving to a rural and idyllic place a few hundred miles away.

Since I don't have a childhood hometown (Air Force child), I never thought of that!
I've been in Charlotte all of my adult life and if I were priced out of here, I'd probably find something in the suburbs that is more affordable. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, Virgie.

Many places where I have lived are outside my comfort range these days! And, I have no desire to live in any of those places!

My hometown is in such decline if I went back I would be "Master of the house, doling out the charm Ready with a handshake and an open palm".

Being priced out on Kauai is a major problem. Luckliy my husband and I invested so our children will always have a place to call home.

I grew up in the hood, so thankfully I don't think I'd ever have trouble buying there

Well I don't think my childhood home is in such a great neighborhood any longer. In fact, the people that my parents sold to went into foreclosure & I did not tell them. I was afraid they would buy back the house!
They held it in high esteem & to be honest it was a piece of junk for today's standards.

Nope, but it happens. Just means you have to get the skills to be worth enough to an employer to earn enough to live there.

Yep, moved for college and knew that I wouldn't be able to afford to move back. The prices were/are rediculous. We were able to buy our first home while in college and my friends that still lived in the area couldn't buy until they were in their 30s with 2 income streams.

I probably couldn't even afford the land my childhood house sat on in Portland, Oregon.

I would not want to live where I grew up. I have no idea what the home prices are ... I am sure they are more than I could afford to buy.

Prices in New York City are obscene and I couldn't afford to buy what I sold for $1 million 20 years ago... it's worth at least 3 times that now. But I live in Charlotte now and don't worry about affording NYC.

Not out of the hometown, but the incomes have not kept up with the property increases, in my opinion. I do live in a fairly affordable area. The hardest pill for me to swallow is thinking about what some of the homes sold for when I was a kid and how much they are now. I think the best way to handle it is to find what is closest to where you want to be that you can be happy with.

It is common here on Kauai where local kids struggle to afford a home for their young families. Often the temporary fix is to share space with relatives, save more for a down payment and then wait for a low in the market to snatch a good deal on a house.

Many of my Bay Area friends had this happen to them, they moved to the East Bay and then Sacramento. We couldn't move back at this point, nor would we want to; San Diego is home until somewhere new calls for us.
