I think this is a wake up call for the entire country.  We don't have a system in place locally that anyone knows about.  Personally, we have a system for a house fire, but nothing for a missile launch or an earthquake or a volcanic eruption.

Hella Mitschke Rothwell Reminds me of the old "duck and cover" days. With what is going on in theworld today, I would seek shelter.

Edit: I just read where this was a false alarm. Still it is better to be safe than sorry.

I woke up to people somewhat freaking out. I wasn't really too worried, I believe the gov't has a bead on anything they will throw at us. On another note, when it's time to go it's time to go, I don't think a shelter is going to make any difference. I trust God for my life, same thing when I paddle out in the ocean.

There is much to be learned from the false alert.

15 minutes wouldn't give me time - I would huddle in my house and know that if it's my time, it's my time! Panic is not a typical response for me so, I am fairly sure logic would prevail!

I can't believe that happened - I feel for the tourists, not knowing what on earth was going on too!

Find the best concrete shelter I could in the shortest amount of time and depending on my distance from the blast seek out a more permanent and better concrete shelter if time permits afterward. The explosion is only the initial part to deal with while nuclear fallout can be a threat for days, weeks and months depending on proximity to ground zero. Ypu'll be more likely to survive if you're at least 10 miles from it's center. A plan and a false alarm is much better than an actual nuclear attack and no plan.    

Hi Hella. It was horrible. It was my father who called me telling me about the alert. The state waited 38 minutes. My parents were frantically thinking they were going to die, there were vehicle accidents like on Mapunapuna, and young children were put in storm drains for safety. I am not amused.

What would I do?

First if China were to attack Hawai'i as North Korea is trivial compared to China the attack would happen when Washington DC is asleep 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. which is 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Hawai'i time.

If I was stuck in the city I would head to Ali'i olani Hale which is made of concrete. If not race to one of the tunnels either Pali Highway or H3. WalMarts are an option too. If all else fails if they are at home which is when it is likely to happen lie face down in the middle of their home. I already warned my family.

It's a wake-up call for all of us, not just Hawaii. 

I believe I would head to the mainland and the East Coast. That is just scary.

I just saw that on TV, Hella. I have no idea what I would do as this is not an issue that is ever raised where I live so I don't think about it. What did you do?

I texted a close personal friend who lives on Keaau, and they have no where to go.  They stay in place and have supplies.  Their Island is all lava rock Hella Mitschke Rothwell.  SO GLAD you and everyone are SAFE - huge scare with the Alert.  No clue as to what I would do in your situation . . .  I will read replies below. 

Great question Hella Mitschke Rothwell and we should all have an answer with the North Korean Kook making threats. Living 15 miles from an Air Force Base and a missile command base I think a missle strike in my neighborhood is a very likely thing. I'm not sure where our nearest shelter is but I'm going to find out.

That is a good question.  Trying to find out which way it is going land would be a quick search adn then decide

I can't imagine how terrifying that must have been...  Where on earth would you go to seek shelter unless you had a bomb shelter....

Pop open a bottle and toast the future. 15 minutes spent in mass panic vs the comfort of my home with the same result, but a different last day experience.

I don't panic, been through too many fires, droughts, earthquakes and even a flood. This wolf muses at the sheep.

Seek shelter.

Of course, it is no joke. It is beyond unfortunate that it happened. Surely there are lessons to be learned from it. 

No kidding, I hear you. This had to be terrifying. What would I do? For sure, seek best deep cover in those 15 minutes, that would be instinctive... not sure it would really make any difference, but certainly not stay in the open...

And here I was, thinking of a vacation in Hawaii....

Very scary thing that happened in Hawaii and Happy it was a false alarm. Now, finally we will make corrections and all of us will have a plan on what to do when the next one is real. My brother-in-law, his wife and 2 children live on Oahu. There is no place to run if you are on an island. There is now some talk about moving near us in Tennessee. Nothing to bomb here. Wish we could get rid of all nuecleaur weapons from this planet, but unfortunately that is not going to happen.

I would have bought a Rolls Royce and dined out on Lobster and Chocolate Mousse.

That would have been SO scary, and imagine the islands were in total chaos.  That guy that pushed the button by accident should be fired! 

How scary, but unfortunately all too realistic in the current environment... No idea what I would do, other than to contact my loved ones. Pretty sure shelters would be useless...

I just rest assured in knowing that if I'm killed by a Korean missle, Uncle Donny and The Patron Saint of Chaos, Gen. Mattis, will make sure there is one less country on the map by the end of the day.

The North Korean leader is celebrating.  No need to send a real one incompetent warning system. When the real one arrives in 37 minutes majority of people will think it is not a threat.
