As soon as there is an alternative that my fb contacts move to, then I'll be gone. I have no allegiance to Facebook - but I do want to keep in touch with everyone I currently keep in touch with, so for now, I continue to use it.

I never thought things I posted on there or did on there was secure anyway.

Yes... nothing I have on Facebook is that sensitive from a personal basis. Not sure this all that different from how Google follows us, etc.

I still use it but have never really done much with it. It is mostly used for groups, such as real estate discussions and such.

I don't take it seriously at all.  I've been in the Info Sec world for a long time and have done many "research projects" on social media for employers that have lead to people being terminated.  Anything you post on social media, even in a private group, is considered no different than standing on a busy street corner with that same message on a sandwich board.  Why do I say that?  Because that was the ruling in a court case about comments made in a private FB group that lead to an employee being terminated.

Whether FB sold the info to a third party, or a third party used OSINT techniques to crawl FB and scrape the info (like Zillow did to Realtor.com) it's all public information with zero expectation of privacy.

I continue to be on FB

     If you don't do anything else, get Facebook out of your cell phone.  See an IT person to make certain it is scrubbed.

Yes, I have changed the  privacy settings. 

The thing is, they already have all your info. Quitting now still means they already have your info. PLUS I am not sure where, why or how anyone thinks that anything you post online is private anyway?

I'll continue to use both my personal & professional Facebook accounts.  I'm really not sure how any of this is different than the scrutiny that countless/most companies put us all under for their own marketing efforts...  

Yes. These type of things happen with lots of companies. Experian and Yahoo for example.

I just don't put on Facebook stuff that is so private that it might harm me. I'm aware it's a money maker for those who do surveys or those who want to target me for specific ads. Nothing is "free" in this world. So, yes, I will stay with facebook, in fact am having a new business page built for me, look for "Rothwell Realty Monterey Peninsula".

Praful Thakkar Whether you continue to use Facebook or not, they still have all your data. I heard this morning that Facebook is not a social media platform, but a data mining platform. Nothing is safe on the Internet.

I was reading a post yesterday that tells you how to download 'their data' or also known as YOUR data. I guess the spread sheet that comes is pretty enlightening. Many had forgot that if you have the FB app on your phone, it swipes all that data also.

I don't know what I am going to do. I will come back to post that article.

Always assume a mic is on or images / videos / account information / etc is sensitive and being recorded... Hack of gmail with purchasing and pay pal would be more serious Praful Thakkar . none of my information on facebook is intended to be private or it wouldn't be on facebook.  It changes nothing.  I always thought they were selling everything they knew

I use Facebook for family and friends and will continue to do so.

I'll continue to use it.  In fact I just got a FB account late last year!  For many years, I was totally against big data especially google and all their services.  Back then I would warn people about their data harvesting, but people did not care because they got to use cool services in return for their data.  So I'm actually surprised now at the amount of people upset.  Why now?  You knew they were collecting your info for years!

 I don't post much. The part that concerns me is the access they have to the information on my phone. 

FB's defense is that users could've done more with their privacy settings; most of us did not.

I have always assumed the worst about what happens to the data we place online, so I'm not surprised.

I will continue to use it as I always have.  I've always assumed that as soon as I start using free programs, whether it be Facebook, Google, etc., these folks are NOT doing it for pure benevolence.  I'm giving up privacy for convenience, and I'm willing to make that trade.  They're not changing the way I vote or purchase, so the jokes on them :)
