I find that Contests serve a very good purpose, it gives focus to a particular question and many solutions are presented. From a learning and sharing aspect it is beneficial. For new members it gives an opportunity  to get to know some of the participants and builds relationships. Last but not least it helps participants to move up the AR Leader board too with the incentive of points. AR was not to be a Bulletin Board it was intended to be an interactive participating community and that is what Contests achieve but what do I know...after all we do not even have a community manager anymore....
