I think it depends on the area, the carpet and the rugs.  I use area rugs over my carpet in two areas.

I like them. The only caveat when selling a home is whether people think the rug is hiding something... but used judiciously it can be a nice look.

I feel rugs are the way to go. Anytime there is something we see on a daily basis can tend to get a little boring after a while or just tired of seeing. You can easy change a rug out to help give your area a new look and feel.

in my opinion, carpeting is at its best in bedrooms....I prefer hardwood everywhere else....and tile in bathrooms...

I dislike the look of an area rug over carpeting....

Depends on rug and carpet--might be okay, might not. I have a rug over carpet in my living room but if my house was on the market I would take the rug away.

Depends .... sometimes in the livingroom area it looks good other times it doesn't. I think that 'MOST TIMES' the floor looks better & has a better flow without rugs.

Seller might also be upset as the rug costs & arm & a leg & she wants to show it off. Problem is it doesn't stay so ??

I have seen throw rugs with a nice pattern and bright colors, over a solid neutral colored rug, and it looked very sharp Erika Rae Albert, Austin Real Estate Expert.  Usually a color or two is picked up from the patterned rug for either pillows, artwork, fresh flowers, or a throw.  Hopefully, she was not thinking a similar colored accent rug over the same color carpet, because that would not stand out, and only have one think, 'is there a stain on the carpet' right here.

If the carpet is a bland neutral color and the rug accents or ties into a couch seating area, it may be ok.  I'm sure we had this look back in the 80s and early 90s... but that was also the time of wallpaper...

Seriously?  I think they used to do that in the 80s.

 

I can't even think of the last time I've seen that.  And, I see a LOT of homes and a LOT of floors.

 

Oh no, wait, I saw a runner over carpet on someone's stairs 5 or 6 years ago.  I think the homeowner was around 80 years old.

 

It's all about hardwood and then area rugs on top of the hardwood.

May want to advise her it can be a tripping liability.  I would strongly suggest she remove it.  It also gives the impression that one may be hiding something under it.  If she is insisting it stay, you may request to see under it, so you know she isn't hiding something.

Personally, it never made sense to me. It hasn't been observed lately although I'm sure the practice remains prevalent in many homes. My last sighting was about a decade ago Erika.

Erika ~ Generally I am not a fan of rugs over carpet, but have actually seen a couple of situations where it worked well.  If the rest of the house is tight, then you might let her have this accommodation, but if it really monkeys up the visual of the room, then you should at least tell her why you don't see it working in this situation.
