Christine,
The self employed who made up 15% of the insurance market are paying the brunt of ObamaDoesn'tCare. Our premiums went from $150 per month for a family of four before the UaCA (UNaffordable Care Act) was rammed through Congress in 2010. Last Year we paid $1,854 per month for the two of us. This year we caught a break as Blue Cross Blue Shield couldn't afford to insure people in Indiana under ObamaDoesn'tCare and the new provider is charging us ONLY $1,650 per month, of course there are fewer providers and doctors so it is tough!
The good news is for our premiums we are forced to pay for maternity, child dental, and substance abuse even though we can't have kids anymore, have no kids below age 18 for dental care, and don't drink, use tobacco or drugs.
This will continue as long as the Democrats in the Senate and a few Republicans afraid of the out of state bussed in professional, leftist demonstrators disrupt their town hall meetings on repealing the ACA.
Nothing will change with the repeal of the individual mandate in 2019 unless they fund the subsidized or absolutely free health insurance for the freeloaders, system gamers, and truly needy out of the general budget. Right now the healthy self employed are picking up most of the bill as most people under employer sponsored insurance have not seen the drastic spike in premium prices that the self employed have.
If we are going to pay for the health insurance for others do it out of the general budget and raise the payroll tax by 1/3 of one percent to pay for it.
Insurance is about risk and it is determined by age and health. I strongly object to having to pay for other's health insurance when I have never drank, used tobacco or drugs, eat organic, and excercise regularly.
There is no solution in sight as long as the Senate filibuster is in place.
The only solution is to AGE and hit Medicare and then sponge off the rest of the taxpayers.

I pay out the nose for my major medical plan. I'm up to nearly $1,000 a month with a $5,900 deductible.
Of course the system is broken. Those paying for it know that.
Those that are not do not see it that way.

I'm not married - so no spouse. My premium each month is likely higher than most of the country's mortgage payment. I am not alone I imagine.

The unafordable care act made our health insurance and deductibles skyrocket. My husband and I are now on a share program and the fees are very, very manageable.

Pay and bite the bullet. I am in the pot and Blue Cross hasn't stopped raising their rate since the inception of Obamacare.

I'm on non ACA temporary insurance myself. Hoping for non ACA permanent healthcare insurance soon. Use an insurance agent who acts like a insurance broker (non captive).
I sold myself my own polices.

We have gone through periods where it was tough with high cost insurance bought on the open market. I have also found most health care providers will automatically discount the costs by a third to not have to deal with filing insurance.

It is a nightmare..
We joined a group policy this year that isnt compliant, so we are keeping fingers crossed.
I have found that telling them you are self pay, is often less than the plan.
Oe of my hubbys meds thru insurance is 138 ,,, self pay? 100
Go figure!
Obamacare was going to cost us 1500 m with 12k deductible...

My spouse and I have always been self-employed. But private insurance seemed to vanish for us with the Affordable Care Act. I think the mandate for a particular type of coverage going away is going to open back up the private marketplace for folks like us and give us reasonable choices. I'm already getting calls from private bokers.

prior to turning 65 (when medicare kicks in) I paid my own Blue Cross Blue Sheild's best plan for 23 years.... the last year was 7 years ago and my monthly payment was $1,750/month for me and the deductible was none on most categories and $300 on a few others...top shelf coverage.... I used it once for a shoulder rotator cuff surgery.... but you can't be without insurance....

We had a major medical plan with a high deductible a few years ago. Glad to have something when my appendix decided it wanted out, but it wasn't a great plan. Not sure what we'd do in this environment.

We have Blue Shield of Idaho with a $10,000/individual max $20,000 family deductible and contribute to our HSA every year. This is the plan we want. We purposely chose the high deductible plan. Our insurance plan was supposed to be caput with ACA and we were going to have to pay DOUBLE for a new plan with a lower deductible that we DID NOT want. However, our current plan keeps being renewed as a "grandfathered" plan every year with the caveat that it is the last year it will be grandfathered. Now with a new administration, we will see what happens. -Kasey

Have faced this issue too, Christine Kankowski North SD and Temecula ... so I understand the challenge all too well. You either pay through the nose ... or you go without. Add any form of prior cancer ... or ongoing medical concern into the mix and it gets even worse. I had "COBRA" for a while and it was brutal.
Hope you find an answer soon ...

I've never had health care access through my spouse. It's always been my own directly paid or through my own employers. There is one advantage to getting old... I've now been on Medicare for the past 5 years.
