Monetizing your blog is a fantastic idea. Make sure that you have an ad space contract that is comprehensive and you may have to have an attorney do it.

Now this is where that discussion elsewhere on disclaimers comes in handy; if it's a product related to your business--a mortgage product home warranty etc--you'll need a disclaimer that states that you are not endorsing your advertisers . . .

AND that you're collecting a fee for the advertising. And you may want to check and make sure that in your state you are allowed to do that.

Debbie Gartner I believe has ads for products in her blog and on her site, if I recall correctly.  Monetizing your site is a great thing and a goal of people on one of the SEO forums I read.  Just make sure you approve of the company and have a kick out clause in case they start doing something you don't want to be associated with (child labor in uganda, dealing in blood diamonds, etc.).

I don't have ads on my website but I think I would allow it if the company is reputable.  Just make sure that you are still in total control over your website and can terminate them if necessary.  I think having some kind of an agreement between you both is good, but make sure that your attorney is reviewing it.

Erika,

We have declined the big bucks, as well as the "guest/informercial" posts.  We had a guy go ballistic because we did.  We personally dislike ads on blogs and have a strong ad blocker on our computers.  So we do onto others....A

I don't and I've not ever considered it. I'm irritated by ads for things I'm not looking for, so I wouldn't subject readers to the same. Then there's the issue of how closely the public associates you with a company you have no control over.

Nothing at all wrong with monetizing your blog as long as it doesn't distract from the primary purpose of your blog, and is a good complement to the subject matter.

Placing ads on your site can generate revenue for you if you have a good amount of website traffic. I would go for it. Just make sure you stay in control of where, they give you the content and make sure they are not scammers who are wanting to steal your bank account info or hack your site. Just make sure they are legit first.

I know people who make a lot of income from ads on their blogs. It is a great way to add an additional stream of income.

I refer them to an anonymized website where affiliate marketing and bartering is ENCOURAGED.

Now, what if that company hired a real marketing company to place their ads via the browser used by the citizen. Jumped on your YouTube videos.

As you can see, there is more than one way to benefit from exploiting your popularity. So, it may be best to find mutual ground that allows you control instead of allowing them to discover they really don't need your consent.

I have ads on my site...mainly on side bar, not in blog posts.  I earn good money from it - often above $4,000 per month.

But, I have an ad agency do this for me for free...that's how it becomes more effective and efficient and it's based on what the user searches for.  But, in order to use those places, you need to have a good number of pageviews/month - generally above 30,000 pageviews/month.

Not sure how one offs work, but generally it's more of a pain in the butt and less money.

BTW, less than 1% click off my site for the ads...it may just be 1/2 a percent.  And, 95% of my traffic is not from my area, so the numbers make sense for me.

Saying “no” is the easy way out. You would have no concern about unsavory or poor quality adds or any other possible negative ramifications.

On the other hand, income is nice. Those of us here who are working are not doing so for free, I believe.

Assuming you do allow the advertising…what rules will be placed on the advertiser…what control will you have on content…what can you do if there is a problem...just the tip of the iceberg.

See…saying ‘no’ simplifies things.

Are you up to the challenge?

I would not be a fan of unknown others' ads on my site. I'm trying to get people to notice me, not send them to people/ places/ things I don't have control over. If one ad points to a bad experience, that would reflect negatively on me.
