OH WOW! Who was watching each home? I would think the builder but, wasn't the listing agent watching the listed home while the sellers were out of town?

I sense impending litigation on the horizon!

And, no, I can't top that one, Lynnea - that's wild!

No I certainly can't top that. That poor home owner. Here in Canada your home can't not go past 72 hours without being checked, if it does your insurance become null and void and that is one of the reasons they have that clause due to water breaks.

So sad for the homeowner. That's a problem with water- it freezes.

Side note: the area in the USA with the largest average sized home is in my area of service: Provo/Orem Utah where the average sized home approaches 2,000 square feet. There is a reason for this; almost everyone has a basement. This is a more than a convenience. Homes have basements to put the major pipes below the frost line.

I'm guessing the owner took the necessary precautions with his vacant homes & winterized it or left the heat on while away? If it was the Contrator's error that caused it there is sure to be some lawsuits in his future. You have to wonder who gave the CO on the new construction. Did they not look at the plumbing? I'd sue everyone.

Cannot top that Lynnea Miller!  I am seeing 'a pattern' here though - built by the same contractor, and he may have a Sub whose work caused (or is still causing) water line breaks.  This can be huge damage with not a quickie fix (furniture, walls, sheetrock, flooring, etc.).  Hello . . .   Insurance Company . . .  and Liability . . .

Just heard about a homeowner that died. His brother(s) live out of town and are planning to come in town to empty the home and ready it for sale. Apparently, the attorney has not emphasized the extent of the property, since squatters have moved in and cleaned out the home for the estate. In the process, they have also taken the copper and other valuables, but let their trash in the home so its condition is maybe a little better than a horder's home...maybe not. I wonder how the brother will feel when he arrives to the home.

Lets see....the owners insurance company will sue the builder. The builder will sue the contractor. The contractor will say they didn't get paid and will sue the owner for work done. (In Florida an owner can get stuck paying twice for the same job)
