She should march herself over to the apple store, or call Apple Care.  I had a 4S, and never had an issue.  It could be a fake vendor that is hoping to con her out of $$$under the guise of fixing it.  We had that type of email from someone claiming that our apple computers had a virus...If you clicked on the fix button, they wanted to get paid claiming they were from Microsoft When we called Apple they told us it was a hoax and they were aware of it!

I would say if she has an iPhone that old probably not. I doubt that any of the new technology and fixes support that old of a model. iPhone is on #10.

I have been using the free version of Lookout Mobile Security which is available in the App Store for a couple years now and it works well. There is a Premium version (I think $29/yr) but as far as I can tell, the only added feature is theft alerts. If she has the Find My iPhone app, she does not need the one in Lookout.

Here's a review from PC Magazine

I am going to check out McAfee Mobile Security that Joseph Domino 480-390-6011 mentioned as well, did not know they had an app.

It doesn't sound like her iPhone got a virus, it just sounds like a scam. She may want to update to a newer iPhone, Apple tends to stop supporting their older phones after a while.

Unless your iPhone has been jailbroken (moving from one carrier to another), Apple phones are generally anti-virus free, just keep up with Apple updates. From time to time I do get locked up on my iPhone, however clearing the page or restarting the phone clears it up quickly.
