When I left the corporate world I promised myself never again to do business plans and I haven't. Lots of people focus on planning and don't ever execute... I just go out and execute.

My plan is in place and it is relatively simple. It aligns with Nina Hollander - I know what needs to be done each day and I do it. Dealing with the curveballs and drama that come my way via the business is never part of any plan of mine ... yet I must deal with that too.

I do have continuous goals of improving my sales skills as well as the business processes and than "Just Do It" as far as implementation. Those are the most important goals and that doesn't change.

I don't waste time on production goal meetings, etc. For myself, it is more of a focus on the implementation to serve my clients, and that brings home the bacon like nothing else.

In my experience, I've found business planning very helpful.  I don't write long plans - if it were 3 pages or more, I'd be surprised.  Looking at where I've been and then to where I want to go, it's been valuable to view both and decide best actions to take for success.

For newbies, it's important to identify a sphere of influence to get started.  At the same time realize your strengths and business preferences will emerge as you engage the process.  Be prepared to rework your plan because the end of the year may find your focus, interests and direction have shifted.  Always be willing to try out what is right for you whether it's in your plan or not. Know when a goal has lost its life and be ready to discard it to free up space for your best performance yet.  Still works for me.
